Dr. Chelsea Gabel appointed Scientific Director of CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is a large Canadian Government backed funding agency for health research projects that involve people as participants. CIHR has scholarships for training University students, and grants for fully-fledged research projects and other supporting initiatives such as Networking Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHRs, like the Wabanaki-Labrador Network). Because health is such a broad and complex field CIHR is broken down into several cooperative institutes which specialize in different fields of research. The Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health is a multi-disciplinary institute at CIHR.
Dr. Chelsea Gabel (Red-River Métis, Associate Professor at McMaster University) will be taking over from acting director Tammy Clifford, and will be leader of the institute for four years. While the acting directors have been doing an excellent job, the stability of leadership for over the next term is welcomed. Congratulations to Dr. Gabel! You can see the full release at the CIHR website here:
