January 25th Update

At tonight's Special Business Committee Meeting, the following motion was passed:

RECOMMENDED MOTION:
That the Business Committee recommends that the Board of Education initiate a 60 day public
consultation process regarding the proposed Long-Range Facilities Plan

WHAT IS NEXT?
On January 31, 2024, the Board of Education will determine if they will initiate public consultation on the Recommended Long Range Facilities Plan. Should the Board of Education choose to initiate public consultation, further information regarding engagement sessions will be distributed.

HAVE QUESTIONS?
All the information presented to date can be found at https://letsconnect.sd67.bc.ca/investing-in-our-future-2

Okanagan Skaha DPAC will continue to attend all meetings and share the information on our page and website.

Photos from Okanagan Skaha DPAC's post 24/01/2024

Last night at the Special Board Meeting, the Long Range Facility Plan was presented to the Board of Education. The FULL presentation pdf and information on what the Long Range Facility Plan can be read at https://letsconnect.sd67.bc.ca/investing-in-our-future-2 . This is the website that will continue to have all the information as we go through the next two meetings, and if the motion is to move forward, there will be at least a 60 day public engagement period, which will also all be posted to this website.

To summarize last night, the district staff are recommending a district wide grade reconfiguration and closure of 3 schools. Below are the slides that highlight the recommendation, but we highly recommend reading the report in FULL detail to understand why these recommendations are being made.

If the public engagement period begins, there will be detailed information on the catchment changes to the existing boundary lines, as well as information for PAC's! Okanagan Skaha DPAC will continue to participate in all meetings over the next week and post updates as they happen. We have representation at all monthly committee and board meetings, and we also participate on the Budget Committee and last year, the Strategic Planning Committee.

Again, read the full report at https://letsconnect.sd67.bc.ca/investing-in-our-future-2 and watch for updates tomorrow night after the Special Business Meeting.

20/01/2024

Due to a Special Board Meeting regarding the Long Range Facilities plan, there will be no formal Okanagan Skaha DPAC meeting this month as the DPAC Executive will be in attendance at the Board Meeting.

Since the majority of parents do not normally attend the monthly public meetings, or the yearly public budget presentation, DPAC would like to share some insight into what the next few meetings are, as well as information on how we got here.

A Special Board Meeting is being held on Tuesday, Jan 23rd at 6 pm at the siyá? House, which is the building behind the School District Board office at 425 Jermyn. It is open to the public to come listen, but please remember it is not a townhall or forum meeting. This is a presentation to the board of the districts recommendations.

On Thursday, Jan 25th, the Business Committee will then review and discuss the recommendation. The Business Committee may make a motion to proceed to the regular Board Meeting. Business Committee meetings are also always open to the public to observe, and it is normal procedure to have the discussion at the Business Committee meeting. This meeting will also be at the siyá? House and begins at 6 pm

On Wednesday, Jan 31st the regular Board Meeting will be held at the siyá? House at 6:30 pm and is again open to the public to attend and listen. If the board accepts the recommendation from the committee, the next step will be to start the public engagement period. The public engagement period is the public's time to come out and review the recommendations and ask your questions. The last time our district went through this process, there were multiple sessions held and many ways to ask your questions.

Now on to WHY we are going through this!

The Long Range Facilities Plan is part of the Strategic Plan, and a requirement of the Ministry of Education & Childcare. You can read more about these plans at
https://www.sd67.bc.ca/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1113124&type=d&pREC_ID=1378382

For those who would like to understand how a school district budget works, below is a presentation from 2020-2021. The actual budget numbers are not reflective of this coming budget process, but this is a great explanation of how the district is funded by the Ministry, and how a school capacity impacts the budget, followed by our schools. https://22.files.edl.io/37cc/02/23/21/040817-ab7f0720-f307-494e-8f07-9ab6fe011a50.pdf

At any of the meetings that are coming, the Board may also decide not to accept the recommendation. The district will most likely post all the updates to https://letsconnect.sd67.bc.ca/ as this is where any open public engagement information is posted (and if not, it will be on the regular website). DPAC will also share the information on our page and website.

We hope by posting more information, parents are able to come to the meetings with some background, and understand what the process is.
