At Origins Academy, regular screening assessments help us understand and support each child’s unique learning journey. By assessing skills like reading fluency, we can tailor our teaching to strengthen foundational skills and foster growth. Here, a dedicated Grade 2 student is reading a fluency passage as part of our, and his, commitment to early literacy. Screening allows us to identify needs early and ensure every student gets the right support to thrive.

This is exactly how we approach instruction at our school! We just received Nancy’s book and can’t wait to read it and to keep learning together.

Words from my Chapter 2 in the book I recently co-edited with Jan Hasbrouck, CLIMBING THE LADDER OF READING & WRITING: Meeting the Needs of ALL Learners. Systematically designed instruction (and materials) will vary based on the range of ease in mastering reading and writing skills. WHO needs, WHAT, and WHY? 🌟 Unlocking the Magic of Embedded Picture Mnemonics at Origins Academy 🌟

At Origins Academy, we’re thrilled to integrate research-informed scaffolds like embedded picture mnemonics into our core instruction and enrichment programs. These research-backed cards help young learners make meaningful connections between letters and sounds, supporting a strong start in reading.

These mnemonics work by embedding an image of a familiar object directly into each letter, creating memorable visuals that reinforce letter-sound relationships. Imagine the letter “z” shaped like a zipper or “r” like a road—visuals like these make it easier for children to recognize and recall sounds, setting a solid foundation in literacy.

In designing these mnemonics, Ontario Lit ensured that each key word:

✨ Starts with the target sound, avoiding blends to keep the sound clear
✨ Is familiar to most children, supporting vocabulary development
✨ Matches the letter’s shape, enhancing recognition

We’ve found these mnemonics particularly helpful with short vowels, a common challenge for early and struggling readers alike.

A as in apple 🍎
E as in echo 📣
I as in itch 🤲
O as in octopus 🐙
U as in umbrella ☔️ (“up with the umbrella!”)
By incorporating these visually engaging tools, Origins Academy creates a supportive, inclusive and interactive learning environment, helping every child connect with reading in an enjoyable, memorable way. 📚✨

Today we learned a new math game that we called Subtractionapalooza. Students started by collecting 15-20 natural objects as a group. Each student had to strategize if they would take away one, two, or three objects on their turn. Their goal was to not be the person who collected the last item. It was fun to see strategies take shape as students played this subtraction game!

We had a little bit of time at the end of class, so we doubled our fun and learned another new math game that helped us practice adding strategies and build fact fluency. You rock, Grade Two!

📚🌳 Tales in the Trees - A Year of Reading Together 🌳📚

We are thrilled to announce the kickoff of our Tales in the Trees reading initiative! 🎉 Today, Max’s father, Travis Hachey, joined us for our very first read-aloud, sharing the delightful book, ‘Too Many Chickens’ by Paulette Bourgeois with two groups of excited students. 🐔🐣

The students were full of curiosity, asking Travis countless questions before and after the reading. His stories from his own family farm truly brought the book to life and made our students smile! The children found the part where the eggs hatch into unruly, stinky hens particularly funny, as it reminded them of last year’s egg incubation project at school, when they watched chicks hatch from eggs, which were provided by Max’s family. This connection between their real-life experience and the story made the read-aloud even more meaningful for them.

We are so grateful for Travis’s time and enthusiasm, and we look forward to many more engaging read-alouds as Tales in the Trees continues throughout the year. 🌲💚 Stay tuned for more exciting moments that inspire a love for reading!

-Ms. Shannon

We love playing games for learning— and this one is no exception! What’s your favourite learning game?

The disCARD decks are the perfect game for repeated practice over the holidays. If your students love UNO, they will love this similar style game — we call it disCARD, as the object of the game is to get rid of all your cards.

disCARD digraph cards are a fun way to get lots of repetition with decoding.

Repeated practice is a must, but this can be laborious. Games are perfect for repetition. Many kids need time to build their blending to read skills, and games can be a lifesaver when they don't want to know about repetition.

Check out the game and all the packs here. There are 3 free packs to try before buying.

An Exceptional Early Education Initiative

Origins Academy inspires and engages students with a uniquely child-centred program aimed at developing curious, thoughtful, and ambitious young learners . Through projects and a knowledge-building curriculum, we advance children’s mastery of core subjects like math, science and reading as well as important capacities such as creativity, strategic thinking and collaboration. At this time, Origins Academy is welcoming children ages 5 to 7 years of age.

Approach

Children’s exceptional academic development and positive self and social development are at the centre of our work. The educational content and approaches used are based on sound research evidence, always. Children direct their learning through their unique interests following a project- and knowledge-building approach that empowers and values children. This personalized learning approach incorporates screening and ongoing assessment to build excellent skills across learning domains.

To achieve the above, we follow a developmental approach that does not restrict children to certain content or grade-level expectations. By consulting the research literature, scope and sequences beginning at basic to more complex are available across curricular areas-- these skill hierarchies guide children’s learning, not grade-levels. Importantly, we provide children the time and space to learn and excel in both an indoor and outdoor environment of more than 5 acres that supports calm, engaging and purposeful play and learning.
