Our P3 students stepped back in time at Carter House and became real explores, map-makers, and treasure hunters for the day! 🧭
Students were welcomed by “Captain Ramirez,” a Spanish sailor from over 400 years ago, who shared stories of sailing across the Atlantic Ocean on a Spanish galleon in search of treasure and valuable goods. Through this immersive experience, students explored how sailors used maps, landmarks, and compasses to navigate the seas. 🗺️
Working in teams, our explorers followed directions, identified landmarks around Carter House, located hidden treasure, and created their very own maps and keys. Along the way, they learned about Bermuda’s coral reefs, the history behind Spanish Point, and the importance of North, South, East and West. 🌊
From compass challenges and map-making to discovering cacao beans, silver, and other treasures from long ago, students showed fantastic teamwork, curiosity, and geography skills throughout the expedition. ⚓️
By the end of the expedition, students confidently used explorer vocabulary to discuss bartering, trading, map keys, symbols and compass directions. They used rich descriptive language to explain treasures, landmarks and their learning while demonstrating excellent teamwork and geography skills. 🌎
Thank you Carter House for partnering to deliver this wonderful experience!
Bermuda Education Network
Organise - Teach - Connect BEN secures funding for investment in targeted projects involving member organisations and public schools.
The Bermuda Education Network (BEN) [Registered Charity #899] is an independent association of organisations offering free supplementary learning opportunities for Bermuda’s public school students. For younger students: enrichment programs during school hours and summer camp resources. For teachers: professional development programs for both public and private school teachers using Artful Thinking, a cognitive development program from Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Project Zero.
P5 students had an incredible time exploring the world of sound during their Sound Lab Expedition BUEI (Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute) ! 🔊
Through hands-on experiments, movement activities, and interactive learning stations, students explored how sound is created through vibrations, how it travels through different materials, and how pitch and volume can be changed.
From testing tuning forks and to “seeing” sound vibrations in action, students were fully engaged in learning through curiosity, collaboration, and scientific investigation. 🎶🔍
It was amazing watching students observe, predict, experiment, and confidently use new scientific vocabulary throughout the experience. A huge thank you to BUEI (Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute) for hosting such an exciting and meaningful learning opportunity for our P5 students! 🎉
What happens when Literacy meets Art and Social Studies? 🎨🌎 Our P4 students discovered exactly that during their exciting visit to Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation
Students explored the role of money in everyday life and learned how it helps us trade, borrow, save, invest, and compare the value of goods and services. They also had the opportunity to step into the role of currency designers, creating their own original Bermuda banknotes inspired by artist Justine Smith. 👩🏼🎨
Using hands-on art techniques including collage, drawing, printing, and layering, students transformed their ideas into meaningful and creative designs while engaging in thoughtful discussions. 🖌️
This expedition was inspired by the mentor text Lemonade in Winter by Emily Jenkins, and now includes downloadable vocabulary and writing activities available on our website! More exciting resources are coming soon!🎉
A special thank you to Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation for hosting such an engaging and inspiring experience for our students. 😊
Our May BEN Book Club marked our first outdoor session of the year, and what a wonderful morning it was! This month, we explored All Aboard for the Bobo Road by Stephen Davies, a story that sparked excitement and engagement. 📚☀️
A special thank you to the Bermuda National Trust for generously welcoming us to use their beautiful outdoor space. Your support helps us create meaningful literacy experiences.
An additional thank you to Jua Seo for organizing our Fortitude Re reader, Ashley, whose warmth, enthusiasm, and wonderful storytelling made the session extra special for children and their families.
Missed this month? Don’t worry, BEN Book Club happens every third Sunday of each month. Sign up on our website! 🔗

Our P3 Space & Magnet Mission: On Earth And Beyond was a hands-on science adventure from start to finish! 🧲🚀
Students explored how the Earth, Sun, and Moon move in space, discovering the science behind day and night, and the phases of the Moon. Through interactive activities, they also investigated magnetic forces, testing materials and observing how magnets attract and repel.
From acting out the Solar System to experimenting at investigation stations, each young scientist was fully immersed in learning through curiosity, movement, and discovery 🌍
A big thank you to Institute for the continued collaboration, and for the incredible planetarium experience which brought space to life 🌌!

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all of the incredible teachers in Bermuda! 🍎
Thank you for shaping the future of our island, one student at a time! 🇧🇲
Bermuda Education Network has helped celebrate the welcoming of King Charles III to Bermuda, with a book written by our very own Becky Ausenda!
Every public and private school on the island received their own copies, and it’s been so exciting to see classrooms across Bermuda diving into the story 📚.
We are delighted to share that even the King himself received a copy, hopefully to share the power of literacy and storytelling back at Buckingham Palace 🇬🇧.
Horizons P5: The Great Garden to Gut Experience 🌱Nutrition and Digestion
Inspired by the mentor text Fresh Juice 📚 P5 students participated in a hands-on outdoor learning expedition exploring the journey of food from soil to plate, and back to the earth.
Students investigated edible plants and their role in a balanced diet, linking their learning to the Food Pyramid and Healthy Plate. They collaborated to prepare fresh pesto, developing teamwork, procedural thinking and descriptive language through a real-life cooking experience.
To deepen understanding, students acted out the digestive system🎭, identifying key organs and how nutrients are absorbed. They also explored composting, examining how decomposers recycle nutrients back into the soil.
This immersive experience supported a clear understanding of the full food cycle: healthy soil → healthy plants → healthy food → healthy bodies.
Real learning, real experiences and lots of fun at Horizons💚
Bermuda Education Network loves Garden Marcus - a wonderful series which introduces young children to the joy of gardening and teaches them about love and kindness. This weekend at Bermuda’s Agricultural Exhibition we read ‘See Marcus Grow’ written by Marcus himself. Additionally, each family received their own copy to take home and continue the reading experience! 💚
