Excerpt from this morning Impact Corner Talk Show. Join us weekly Dr. G & Ms. Thang – Monday 7:45am on Power 95: Today’s Focus: BY NAVIGATING THIS THING CALLED THE GLASS CEILING
Before we can begin to navigate through, or around the glass ceiling, it is important first know what is the glass ceiling and then we can devise strategies to overtake or even break the ceiling – well, it’s made of glass isn’t it? In 1978, writer consultant Marilyn Loden at a panelist discussion about women in the workplace, came up with the idea to describe the challenges women face when their careers stagnate at middle-management roles, preventing them from attaining higher leadership or executive positions. And more recent when one refers to “the glass ceiling” it is captured as a metaphor describing an invisible barricade that marginalizes women and other minor groups from reaching higher levels of professional status. These barriers are biases entrenched in the culture of organizational hierarchies that intentionally keep individuals from advancing into senior management positions, regardless of one’s qualification…
But before we can attempt to break the ceiling, we must be able to identify it. There are at least 3 basic steps one can take to begin to tackle the glass ceiling a) Channel your frustration into purposeful action. First recognize the glass ceiling is no reflection of your value as a person or as an employee; because of the organization, you will still be denied the opportunity, b) Develop your awareness - by learning more about the organization you currently work for or one you intend to work for by observing the culture of the organization. c) Raise your concerns: if the organization is predominantly male or the last time a female was promoted in the organization was 25yrs ago, then raise your concerns. If you are credentialed for the position, then raise concerns and if all else fails then, take responsibility for your own development.
There’s a story told of a female who took on a leadership position that had always been held by a male. On this particular occasion, the CEO was in town and wanted to meet with all his leaders (again, they were all male except for the 1 female). They were engaged in meetings, then the meeting carried over during the lunch break. And the CEO got up to go to the men’s room and of course, the conversation was a heated one and he commanded his leaders to follow him in the restroom, and she marched in with all the other leaders into the men’s bathroom. Stunned by her presence, the CEO wanted to know why she was in the men’s bathroom, and she replied, “You asked all your leaders to follow you in the men’s bathroom, well here I am!”
Sometimes ladies, we must recognize that the glass ceiling is glass, and it can be broken if we exercise fortitude!
Remember, you are the composer with the pen. Begin transcribing your destiny. See you next week!

THE POWER OF SELF-DISCIPLINE:
As a leader, it is important to hold yourself accountable.
ASK YOURSELF --->
When no one is looking, are you completing the tasks needed to take your business, organization, or group to next level greatness?
Are you practicing the values you encourage the individuals you lead to live by?
Self-discipline helps you stay accountable when there's no one around to monitor you.

There is a lot going on around us right now, but I am praying that you all stay encouraged!
Also, I am praying that everyone is taking care of themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
A great way to look after yourself during these troubling days is by writing down goals for your self-care.
For example, a goal could be to take a walk every day or journal every day for the next two weeks. Whatever your self-care goal is, I would love to hear about it below, so I can support you in your journey!

To every grandmother, mother, stepmother, foster mother and godmother, allow this day to be a time of reflection and gratefulness. My greatest prayer for all of us is that our children who have been loaned to us ‘walk in truth’. To me that is the best Mother’s Day gift that can be bestowed upon us, knowing that we have raised and are raising our children in the best way possible.
Really celebrate and enjoy this day! Dr. g
