Using memorized phrases in your IELTS writing? Not a good idea! Here is why:
First, it misses the whole point of the exam. IELTS is all about checking how well you can communicate in English. When you try to sneak in these lazy, memorized phrases, you're not really showing off your true language skills or creativity.
What's more, the examiners are like phrase detectives. They can spot those memorized bits VERY EASILY, and that can RUIN your scores. In addition, it makes your essay feel disconnected from the topic, thus making it less interesting and coherent.
Here is the really important thing: IELTS topics are very diverse. Relying on memorized phrases won't help you when you need to adapt to different subjects. Remember, you will NEVER KNOW what your writing topics will be before the exam!
So how can you memorize the answers if you don't know what the question will be?
Beware of any instructor or school that encourages memorizing phrases and using them in your writing. This is a very common problem, which I see all the time.
Bottom line, ditch the memorized phrases and use your real English skills!
This is a wonderful testimonial from one of our past students, William.
He just earned a 7.5 in the IELTS exam!
Great work, William!
My name is William, I started preparing for the IELTS test to apply for a masters degree overseas , and eventually got 7.5 on the test!
I had no experience with the IELTS test before I first started with Patrick from IELTS Experts, however, Patrick helped me a lot over the next few months.
I learned a lot of great tips and advice which helped answering Listening and Reading questions more quickly and accurately. The importance of regular practice was emphasized, and the homework after classes really helped me. I could feel my improvement with each practice.
In terms of listening skills, the Listening practice not only helped train my listening ability, but also pushed me to speak.
For writing, the Task 1 and 2 assignments and feedback helped me a lot with my writing structure ,which helped me achieve a 7.5. I really appreciate Patrick’s help. He’s a nice and hard-working teacher, and I believe everyone can improve and reach their goal in the IELTS exam with his help!

Sometimes, it can be helpful to remember that the IELTS exam is not your enemy!
The IELTS exam serves as more than just a language proficiency test; it plays a crucial role in preparing you for life and education in an all-English environment!
By evaluating your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, the IELTS assesses your ability to effectively communicate in diverse academic and real-life scenarios.
This comprehensive evaluation enables you to identify your language weaknesses and improve your English fluency.
Moreover, the exam familiarizes you with the language demands you will encounter while studying or residing abroad, and help to build confidence in your communication abilities.
Through IELTS, you can not only prove your language proficiency but also adapt and get ready for the challenges you will face in an English-speaking environment!
Here is another common problem we often see in Task 2 writing...
The main differences between the phrases 'Most of the ___" and "Most ___' is the difference between general and specific.
For example, "Most of the people" is about the majority of a specific group, like "most of the people in the room."
However, "Most people" is more general, talking about the majority overall, like "most people enjoy ice cream."

Have an upcoming IELTS exam?
Lack confidence in your writing and speaking abilities?
We can help!
Hi friends,
For several months, I’ve been getting private messages from people who have reached out with questions like, “how can I become better at Task 1 writing in a very short time" or “how
can I go about improving my Task 2 scores? I only have 3 weeks before my exam!”
The more questions I got, and the more time I spent researching existing IELTS Writing materials , it became clear that there was a gap.
The materials available often require a serious time commitment, and people weren’t getting the results they wanted quickly enough. They were looking for more support.
So that’s why I’m sharing this IELTS Writing Starter Course idea.
The goal would be to help time-strapped students build their confidence and master the basic skills necessary to reach a 6.5 in IELTS Writing in as short a time as possible.
The thought is there would be a starter course to focus only on the most essential skills and techniques and to help people to get the scores they need...FAST!
I know. As I said, it’s a little rough around the edges. And there’s lots of work to do.
And before I go too far down the line, I’d love for you to let me know your thoughts.
If you think that this is something that would fly… share a simple “like” or let me know in
the comments. If you think it’ll flop, let me know that too (but remember, be gentle!).
Thanks! Look forward to hearing your thoughts!
"How do I make sure I am understanding the Task 2 question correctly?"
One of my students asked me this question the other day.
I wanted to share my answer with you here in case you have the same question.
The simplest way is to break the question into smaller parts: statement and question.
The statements ALWAYS provide the topic, while the questions tell you EXACTLY what you need to write about.
Does that make sense to you?
Let me know in the comments below:
What other questions about Task 2 would you like me to answer?
Do you find it hard to perfect paragraph structure for your Academic Task 1 writing?
And every time you try to do something about it, you either get stuck or can’t even get started.
Don’t worry! You are not alone.
I recently had a high school student who was completely overwhelmed by IELTS Academic Task 1, until we sat together and worked out exactly what she needed to do in only 3 paragraphs. By breaking down the Task 1 into 3 smaller parts, she was able to get over her 'fear' of Task 1, and was able to get through it even more quickly.
Believe in yourself, and you can do it too!
Let me know in the comments below:
What do you find MOST DIFFICULT about Task 1 writing?
I noticed some of you having trouble describing the feeling of not being able to understand a concept or idea.
If this is you, you can use the idiom: "Wrap your head around something."
For example, imagine you are trying to understand someone's reasons for a decision they have made, and you cannot understand their reasoning. Then you can say: "I just can't wrap my head around their reasoning!"
Let me know in the comments below:
Where else can you use this idiom?
We have gotten many messages asking for this, so we've decided to make it a regular feature!
