Operating as usual
NIOSH is recognizing any U.S. fire department that enrolls 50% or more than 300 of their active firefighters in the National Firefighter Registry (NFR) for Cancer as a Gold Helmet Department.
How it works
Departments who have at least 50% or more than 300 active firefighters signed up for the NFR for Cancer are eligible.
Here’s how it works:
If you believe your department has met the eligibility criteria, please email [email protected] and provide the total number of active firefighters in your department.
NIOSH will then review the NFR database. If your department meets the criteria, NIOSH will send you a confirmation email. This email shares details about the Gold Helmet Department recognition and includes a certificate, website badge, and social media posts to share.
Gold Helmet Departments can share their accomplishment with their networks via email, social media, or other channels using
Gold Helmet Departments This page provides information about NIOSH fire fighter research. Within this site, you will find summaries and links to current NIOSH projects, programs, publications, and resources created to improve the health and safety of structural/vehicle fire fighters and wildland fire fighters.

‼️FIREFIGHTER PFAS INJURY COMPENSATION ACT - HELP FIREFIGHTERS - CALL YOUR SENATOR/REPS TODAY‼️
🚒 If you’ve ever had to call the fire department for a fire or medical emergency, you know how great firefighters are and how much they care about the communities they serve.
⛔️ However, did you also know that the leading cause of death of firefighters on the job is not smoke or accidents – it’s cancer? One of the biggest reasons is because firefighters are exposed to toxic PFAS chemicals found in turnout gear and firefighting foam. It’s terrible, but here’s one way we can help them and it only takes 2 minutes.
☎️ Please call or email (or both) your 2 US Senators and 1 US Representative to ask them to pass the Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act (S.4013/ H.R.7788) (all the links you need are below). The more people that call, the more likely it is to pass! All you have to say is: “I’m writing/calling to urge Rep./Senator to pass the Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act (S.4013/ H.R.7788).” That’s it and you will have made a huge difference!
🧯If the Firefighter PFAS Injury Compensation Act (S.4013/ H.R.7788) passed, it would establish a fund to compensate firefighters who have been diagnosed with (or have died from) diseases associated with PFAS exposure.
