I’ve been training in Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) since I was 16 years old, and from day one I’ve always had a deep appreciation for stick fighting… honestly, weapons training as a whole.

Over the years, I missed out on two opportunities to compete in events — and in Barbados, those opportunities are few and far between. Unfortunate, yes… but sometimes life simply moves that way.

Now, 25+ years later, I came across an advertisement for the inaugural Barbados National Stick Fighting Competition. The moment I saw it, my ears perked up. No hesitation… I was in.

Not for the money.
Not for the “glory.”
But simply for the opportunity to compete freely and express something I genuinely love to do.

As for preparation — there were no major refreshers or special stick fighting camps for me. I stepped into competition relying purely on instinct, experience, and the strong foundation laid by my instructor, G**o Wayne Quintyne of Unified Martial Art Academy.

Special mention as well to my personal trainer, Kirk Bovell of Body Shapers. I simply told him:

“I’m competing, and I want to work on my cardio.”

He understood the assignment and delivered 100%.

I competed under my own banner, Fighting Measure Martial Arts — something my instructor encouraged me to build many years ago. Today, it represents not just me, but my journey… the lessons from training under him, the experiences gained from working with many high-level instructors over the years, and my own continued evolution within this art and the others we offer.

With that said, we’re looking to reintroduce FMA to our public class schedule in the coming months.
