Today is World Family Doctor Day! We celebrate the role of primary care physicians (P*P) in health care systems across the world. P*Ps have a unique role due to the close nature of the doctor patient relationship and continuity of care. As a P*P it is essential that patients are comfortable with you and feel heard. This goes a long way to getting an accurate and detailed history.
When I opened my practice on May 19th 2014 I actually had no idea it has been established as World Family Doctor Day four years prior but how fitting!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) begins before the age of 3 years and can last throughout a person’s life, although symptoms may improve over time. Some children show ASD symptoms within the first 12 months of life. In others, symptoms may not show up until 24 months of age or later. Some children with ASD gain new skills and meet developmental milestones until around 18 to 24 months of age, and then they stop gaining new skills or lose the skills they once had.
If you are questioning the possibility that a child in your life may have ASD, discuss it with your primary care physician. A referral can then be made for assessment.
The Albert Cecil Graham Development Centre, formerly known as the Children’s development Centre, provides assessment and rehabilitation services for children with disabilities as well as counselling and social support for parents and guardians during this time. The Centre provides assessments of all referred clients such as those with developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, intellectual or learning challenges, specific learning disabilities, communication disorders and congenital syndromes.

"Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21. This extra genetic material causes the developmental changes and physical features of Down syndrome.
Down syndrome varies in severity among individuals, causing lifelong intellectual disability and developmental delays. It's the most common genetic chromosomal disorder and cause of learning disabilities in children. It also commonly causes other medical abnormalities, including heart and gastrointestinal disorders."
