Our director holds a Masters in Education and the Diploma in Education in teaching practice with distinction. He is also a Tutor of 30 + years at the Barbados Community College. Our Visionary Growth
The Extra edge was started in 1999 by Romero Lashley with one class in preparation for the common entrance examination. We grew to over 25 teachers seeing over 200 primary and secondary students yearly across a wide number of locations. Though we have shrunk in phydical locations , virtual instruction has allowed us to maintain extensive reach. ON LINE FORUM WITH PARENTS
We recognize the strong relationship between parenting and the development of children with healthy opinions of themselves and high aspirations for the future, whatever their abilities. Through various methods ( virtual meetings, shared publications,
parents' peer education,) we highlight appropriate parenting practices and share important tips . WE TEACH STUDENTS OF ALL ABILITIES
Every Child Matters
Specialists in learning difficulties instruct our Special Needs Unit. Apart from children who are assigned to these very small remedial groups we teach mixed ability levels. This allows greater chances for students improving their performance. Separation into ability groups can limit the aspiration of children who find themselves in lower groups. BOOK CLUB PROMOTES READING
Every student who joins the Extra Edge is automatically enrolled in our BOOK CLUB. With technigical changes, the term 'book' now
extends to electronic sources of reading material. We ask parents' help in verifying and supporting reading from physical or virtual sources. Students are rewarded forvteading and also asked to share 'book reports'. This brings us to
ORAL EXPRESSION. Beyond the mathematics, comprehension and composition skills, our programme includes personal development and oral expression coaching. The self-esteem component aims to support the development of children's confidence by offering weekly opportunities for oral expression, cheered on by tutors. Each week, students recite our MOTIVATIONAL CREED and are encouraged to share their personal goals and milestones with their respective tutors and groups. we believe that a more confident Barbados must be built one child at a time.
