A friend and colleague asked me for some practical study tips. Here are the suggestions I shared with him (please feel free to comment and share your own take):
1. Have a current syllabus for the subject
2. Get as many past papers (I suggest up to 10years but this is an arbitrary standard)
3. Please get hold of the recommended textbook
4. Be consistent with study-habits rather than adhoc
5. Make a study timetable and stick to it at least 80% of the time. It's OK to vary from it but stick it more often than not.
6. Study when you're refreshed and not tired
7. Minimize or eliminate all distractions. This will help to keep you focused (along with not being tired)
8. Study for short but intense periods, and stop every few paragraphs (or pages) to revise what you just read to make sure you can recall it, and that you do understand how to apply it.
9. Use groups to help you learn, especially for your weaker subject or help someone who is weak in a particular subject. However the group size should be no more than 4-6 people. Larger groups should form two smaller groups, and each group meeting should start with making an objective so everyone can stay on track.
10. Finally, study to actually learn the subject and not simply to regurgitate for the exams.
