Although doctors and nurses are on the front lines here at the QEH, they do not and cannot do it alone. Non-clinical members of staff also play a significant supporting role in the provision of care to our patients. One such person is Corey Drakes, Medical Physicist in the Clara Brathwaite Centre for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, 2014 Common Wealth Scholarship awardee, and this week’s .

Quiet, incredibly helpful, and polite, Corey is an old soul whose favourite meal consists of his grandmother’s rice, macaroni pie and baked .

An employee of the QEH for four years, the highlight of Corey’s service at the QEH came in 2019 when he designed and constructed a radiation test in a single week. This test allowed the QEH to participate in a Postal Dosimetry Audit held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to verify the calibration of radiotherapy beams in developing countries. The results showed that our Cobalt 60 Radiotherapy Unit which uses gamma rays to treat conditions such as cancer is correctly calibrated.
Corey loves his job so much that should he win the he plans to donate a Linear Accelerator, which delivers high energy x-rays or electrons to the region of the patient’s tumour, to the hospital.

Had he not pursued a career as a medical , Corey believes he would have stayed true to his childhood dream and become .

Content with where life has taken him, Corey’s advice to children experiencing challenges at school is “Not everyone learns at the same rate. Continue to put in the effort and one day you’ll reap the rewards for all your hard work.”
