Leadership Matters
In today’s Daily Nation, I reflect on a simple but powerful truth: “Leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less.” – John C. Maxwell.
In parliamentary systems especially, leadership at the top inevitably shapes governance, tone, and national direction. Elections are more than political contests; they are moments where influence, vision, clarity, and conviction are tested before a nation.
Strong leadership is not about noise or personality alone. It is about the ability to inspire confidence, articulate vision, build trust, and move people toward purposeful action—especially in uncertain times.
As we reflect on recent developments, one thing remains clear: leadership matters.
Take a read and join the conversation.

Many get caught in the trap of competition—not just comparing themselves to others but also trying to one-up them. But competition will distract you, drain you, and derail you.
Let your purpose outweigh your desire to compete. Not everything you see others doing is for you. Stay focused. Stay in your lane.

Always interesting looking back at a 10-years-younger version of myself and seeing what was on my mind then. Honestly, I don’t think this one was too bad—it still feels pretty relevant today. What do you think?

✨ Reflecting on a Decade of Service in Child Protection ✨
This year marks ten years of Child Protection Protocol development and training across our region, and my heart is full of gratitude. I am especially thankful to Dr. Lisa McClean-Trotman the incredible team at UNICEF Eastern Caribbean for affording me the opportunity to serve our children and to help safeguard their future. 🙏🏽💙
Most recently, I had the privilege of serving in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, at the Ministry of Education’s Summer Institute 2025 under the inspiring theme:
“FULL S.T.E.A.M Ahead: Future Focused, Student Led.”
It was an honour to facilitate two sessions with principals, senior school leaders, counsellors, and auxiliary staff on the topic: “Creating Safer Schools: Understanding and Upholding our Child Safeguarding Responsibilities.”
I wish to sincerely compliment the Honourable Minister, Sharie B. de Castro (pictured), along with the Ministry and its highly professional, driven team, for their unwavering commitment to ensuring the best interests of children remain at the centre of education. Their dedication to ensuring no harm is done is both inspiring and exemplary.
Indeed, the British Virgin Islands are meticulously setting themselves apart as leaders in Child Protection across our region. 🌎✨
Special commendations go out to Mrs. Orlandette Crabbe and Mrs. Heida Joyles-Selwood for their outstanding leadership and support in this important work.
Here’s to a future where every child learns, grows, and thrives in safety. 🌱👧🏽👦🏽

I’m always looking for good leadership principles to help inspire those who have the task of leading.
This past weekend, Senior Pastor of the Potters House, TD Jakes, gave us several strong principles on leadership transitions and succession planning. Take a look at what I came up with. I’ve taken the liberty to add a scripture to highlight each principle’s biblical foundation. Please feel free to add yours.
1. Succession Must Be Spirit-Led, Not Just Skill-Based
T.D. Jakes reminded us that succession is about spiritual discernment, not popularity or performance.
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:7
⸻
2. Public Affirmation Validates Private Preparation
Years of development culminated in a public endorsement—affirmation builds trust in the successor.
Scripture: Matthew 3:17
⸻
3. Legacy Requires Intentional Investment
Leadership succession doesn’t happen by default; it demands time, mentoring, and patience.
Scripture: Psalm 145:4
⸻
4. Honor the Past While Empowering the Future
Jakes modeled how to respect tradition while releasing the next generation to lead in their own voice.
Scripture: Proverbs 22:28
⸻
5. Timing Is Critical in Leadership Transitions
He transitioned while still thriving—wise leaders pass the baton from a position of strength.
Scripture: Ecclesiastes 3:1
⸻
6. Succession Is a Kingdom Mandate
This wasn’t just a leadership move—it was a spiritual mantle passed for generational impact.
Scripture: 2 Kings 2:11–13
⸻
Leadership transitions done well preserve legacy, protect vision, and empower the future.

Your focus will either make or break you. Stay focused. Always remember your WHY!

One of my all time favourite MLK quotes.
Sometimes self-evaluation is necessary. Why do I do what I do as a leader? Am I doing what I do for selfish gain or am I genuinely interested in adding value to others? Is making me look good my priority or am I more committed to making others look good?
A life well lived is a life of adding value to others.

Discipline is critical to your success. It matters not how much ability you have; if you’re not disciplined, you will constantly wonder why others are so successful and you are not!

You have the choice; negativity vs positivity.
