What the hand does, the mind remembers.

Sensorial activities are used in #Montessori learning to help children in discrimination and order. They also help broaden and refine a child’s senses. When a child combines Montessori designed #materials with sensorial work, it helps them become more logical, perceptive, and aware.

Dr. Montessori developed the concept of sensorial work long before sensory play was put into practice. In Montessori philosophy, the child is considered the “sensorial explorer” and learns to perceive qualities through sensorial experiences.

At Zonnekind we also offer a vibrant Montessori after school program specialized for children going to Kindergarden.

During after school we follow the same ground rules as during the mornings and provide a consistent routine. After arrival our program begins with a gross motor period each day followed by engaging activities in the classroom and snack time. After school materials focus on art, movement, outdoor play, and more!

One of our friends is working on a geography lesson about land, water and air.

He is exploring animals' natural habitat through a matching activity. By sorting animals according to where they live: either on land, water, or air.

Montessori Daycare Zonnekind Aruba

Play is the work of the child. At Daycare Zonnekind we teach our children to take care of themselves, others and the world. Learning about nature, animals, emotions. But also in a fun loving way we teach them letters, numbers, 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. Broading their vocabulary, teaching them about the world and everything on it.

Here is a little peek inside our classroom. We do not have any openings at the moment but are still accepting children for next school year.

I can do it myself!

To help the child reach her full potential, we try to understand the inner drives and offer the best guidance and environment in which the foundation of the personality can be formed.

Only the child can achieve self-construction. Adults have the responsibility to assist her. At daycare Zonnekind we understand the stages of growth and we prepare ourselves and the environment to foster her best development.

Then we let go—

It is the child who strives to be independent to grow and to learn. It is her process. While we may believe we are “helping” the child, in fact, any time the adult offers assistance or interrupts, the adult becomes an impediment to the child’s growth.

Making and using your own playdough is a great practice for many kitchen skills:

measuring, mixing, rolling, cutting, and chopping. It is a wonderful activity that our children love to do!

What are we working on with the Pink Tower?

-The concepts of “size” and “volume” because all cubes have the same color and the same shape and differ only in size.

-Counting, as we are placing the cubes. The decimal system, as the tower is composed of 10 cubes, and the child gets used to working with groups of 10 units.

-The sense of order and visual discrimination, as we arrange the cubes according to their size.

-The stereognostic sense when we build the tower with closed eyes.

-Respect and care of materials as we hold and carry the cubes one by one and carefully.

-Concentration, hand-eye coordination, patience, balance.

There are also many variations and extensions for this material, making it interesting for every stage of development.

Sometimes people are surprised to learn that Montessori principles can apply from birth. And most commonly I hear people say, “if only I’d known about these ideas earlier”.

Montessori revolves around three things: hands-on learning, self-directed learning, and developing key life skills such as independence, self-esteem, and concentration.

While the typical one-year-old isn’t ready to play collaboratively, there are lots of hands-on learning and self-directed activities that they are developmentally ready to tackle. In other words, a one year old is beyond baby play!

After observing an Ant carrying a bread crumb to his nest we wanted to learn more about Insects and specifically ants! We have been busy this week reading books about Ants and doing some hands on learning about the Ant Life Cycle. Did you know:

- There are more than 12,000 species of ants all over the world.
- An ant can lift 20 times its own body weight. If a second grader was as strong as an ant, she would be able to pick up a car!
- Some queen ants can live for many years and have millions of babies!
- Ants don’t have ears. Ants "hear" by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet.
- When looking for food, ants leave a pheromone trail so that they know where they’ve been.
- Queen ants have wings.

We are learning about different life cycles, starting with the bean plant. We learned all about the different stages of the plant and will plant our own beans next week to watch them grow!

1. Seed
The seed is the housing for the entire internal parts of the seed. This is the stage it is in when it’s ready to be planted in the soil.

2. Germination
At this stage, the embryo, or baby plant, is ready to sprout from its external coating and seek water and nutrients from the soil with its roots.

3. Seedling
After penetrating the surface of the soil with its stem, the seeds adolescent leaf structures begin to mature. This is when it has reached the seedling stage. At the same time, the roots develop and pe*****te ever deeper within its soil abode.

4. Plant
Once the leaves have matured into an adult plant, it begins the flowering stage and is ready to reproduce. The moment a plant is ready to reproduce is the end of the life cycle and the process repeats itself.

We strive for children to build their reality of life through real experiences. What could be better than exposing our children to activities they also see their mom and dad do while they grow up?

One of the characteristics of a normalized child is their “attachment to reality”. We strive to provide real material as safely and practical as possible. We want children to develop real skills and habits for living in a real world.

Hanging laundry is a practically irresistible activity. It will help our children improve gripping skills, fine-motor-skills and hand-eye coordination. This Montessori activity also stimulates a sense of accomplishment.

At Montessori Daycare Zonnekind we values nature and we aim to help our children understand their role in supporting nature as it supports us.

In all things, we recognize and emphasize the connections between the natural world and ourselves. Our unique classroom design brings nature inside the classroom, from the decor to the learning materials and our very large L shaped outside play area is a wonderful place that allows us to emerge in nature, experience the life cycle of birds, mango's, cashew and butterflies etc.

The common phrase "choose your work" used in the Montessori classroom has caused a massive myth surrounding the playful nature of the classroom.

Some seem to think that all Montessori children do is wander around choosing not to learn anything (because what else would children choose?). Others seem certain that the Montessori classroom is an academic factory, pushing children to learn skills with a disdain for any kind of playful spirit.

Current educational theory holds that children learn through play, a common phrase that by semantics alone seems to put it at odds with Montessori philosophy.

Montessori loved the word she used to describe the learning process - work. She believed that the word "work" correctly conveyed the amount of effort the children put into expanding their minds and strengthening their bodies and nourishing their spirits. The word "play" by comparison seemed dismissive of this greatness.

The word "work" takes on a new meaning. The child is in a state of becoming. The adult that will emerge is a mystery, but we know that it will take a lot of energy to get there. We acknowledge this great effort on the part of the child.

We may choose to call it work, or we may choose to call it play. Maria makes no distinction between the two. We just feel the word work shows more respect for the child's nature, and that is all.

Connection to nature and inspiring wonder are an integral part of the Montessori Philosophy and Method. The Montessori Method also stresses that immersion in nature is imperative for proper physical and psychological development.

Not only outside but also inside our classroom, there is an intrinsic connection between nature and many of our materials. We have lessons and materials about our local animals and plants, how to take care of our beaches, how and what can you recycle. We hope to inspire our future generation to be a caring one.

One of the things that distinguishes Montessori from more classical educational approaches is the way children are encouraged to learn by touching, feeling and doing.

In traditional learning environments, children do what the teacher tells them to do. In contrast, Montessori children are encouraged to move around the classroom and engage with the wide variety of activities available. They choose the activity they would like to work on, bring it to a table or mat, explore the materials and make discoveries for themselves.

Pictured is one of our students exploring what is sinking or floating with real objects in water. Hands on learning above working with worksheets!

Message us on 5617517 to schedule a viewing in the weekend.

Children are people, and people make mistakes. The experience of childhood is filled with small errors like spilling water or dropping food. The Montessori approach cherishes children’s freedom to make – and correct – their own mistakes. This process is called “control of error,” and it is built into all Montessori work.

The fact that Montessori education and materials are self-correcting, and we as guides are taught to empower the child to make mistakes and later correct himself, leads to young people who hopefully grow into adults that are not constantly looking for guidance or approval outside of themselves. These foundational experiences will teach them that making mistakes is proof that you are trying, and is sometimes the best, most powerful way to learn. They will become confident, strong people who don't back down when a challenge is presented, because they trust their intuition and know they have the answers and resilience within themselves. We believe this is one of the most powerful gifts we as Montessori teachers can give our children - the power to enter the world fearless and believe in themselves.

Do you hope to ignite your young child’s love of learning and lay the foundation for a fulfilling future? The Montessori approach to early childhood education will begin that process in a joyful, secure, and loving environment in which your young child will thrive.

The Early Childhood level encourages children to explore and discover, to collaborate with friends, and to take ownership of their education. The Montessori Method encourages self-directed learning that promotes self-confidence, independent thought and action, and critical thinking, while fostering social-emotional and intellectual growth.

We are now scheduling viewings on Saturday mornings. If you are interested to come have a look for yourself message us at 5617517.

Did you know that many scientists believe that bananas were the first fruit in history?!

Bananas grow on plants called banana palms. While many people think that banana palms are trees, they are actually considered to be an herb. In fact, the banana palm is the largest herb in the world. When fully grown, the bananas look like the fingers of the plant. In fact, the word banana is derived from the Arabic word meaning finger and a group of bananas is referred to as a hand.

Our children enjoyed a great lesson about bananas and where they come from followed by a self exploration station.

As we observe children, we see the vitality of their spirit, the maximum effort put forth in all they do, the intuition, attention and focus they bring to all life’s events, and the sheer joy they experience in living.

Enrollments for our 1 year old group have closed until december due to full capacity.

Enrollments for our 2-4 year old group are still open for now.

Every little detail in our environment is carefully prepared for our children to thrive. One might not notice at first glance, but even our puzzles are specifically chosen.

In this puzzle activity the child not only learns to put back the puzzle pieces, but also learns about the different body parts of a bird and can see what the skeleton looks like underneath.

The child cannot develop if she does not have objects around her permitting her to act.

Our Story

The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man’s intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed”. -Maria Montessori, Founder of the Montessori method of schooling.

Every child has tremendous imagination and potential. Our success lies in seeing our students develop a life long desire for learning, exploration and innovation. We believe every child should be afforded this opportunity and we work very hard to provide the tools and guidance to enable self-directed learning.

At daycare Zonnekind, we believe a solid foundation early in life creates a self-confident, contributing adult. We follow traditional Montessori methods, providing a learning environment that nurtures the whole child.

In our classroom we speak Dutch with the children and offer daycare between the hours of 07.00 till 18.00. In the morning our group exists of children between the ages of 2 and 5 and in the afternoon we provide daycare for children between the ages of 2 and 7.
