'I cannot think of something more important than the health and wellbeing of doctors and medical students. As a profession, we have been talking about this for over 100 years now and still not developed an appropriate solution. Whilst awareness is important but action is essential and long overdue.
Imposter syndrome is an all too familiar concept for medical students but unfortunately, it can persist even as a senior medical professional. Anecdotally medicine attracts perfectionist people-pleasers, which unfortunately has been identified as risk factors for imposter syndrome.'

“I have absolutely loved being the 2023 Liaison and Advocacy Officer. This year, I dedicated my time in the role to advocating for parents and soon-to-be parents within our student body to the Faculty and working alongside the AMSA Gender Equity Advocacy Officer. Liaising with QMWS has been the highlight of this role and has created opportunities to network and establish lasting professional relationships with some outstanding doctors in Qld. This role is flexible, with the option to involve yourself in other SWIM events and larger advocacy projects if you have time. Please don’t hesitate to send me a message on Facebook if you’re interested in nominating!”

The SWIM Sponsorship Officer role has been very fulfilling this year, as well as providing a challenge as COVID continually changes the way we engage with partner organisations and funding. This year, we were able to maintain ongoing partnerships, foster new ones, and connect with many businesses throughout the community. It’s very rewarding to work on such a variety of events with SWIM and to contribute by organising raffles which raise funds for worthy causes while giving prizes to our amazing SWIM community! I have thoroughly enjoyed being on the SWIM committee these past two years.

“Serving as Academic Vice-President for 2023 has been such a wonderful experience, and a great opportunity to work closely with members of the SWIM exec and meet other students from across all year levels. I have loved getting to know the new first years through organising a number of Clinical Exam Tutorial days, as well as catching up with some SWIM alumni who kindly volunteer their time to come back and tutor. The Professional Development events have also been a fantastic experience, bringing together students across all year levels, and some fantastic guest speakers. Bringing students together for academically enriching events has been incredibly rewarding, and students always find our events to be valuable to their learning and enjoyable to attend. Position - Treasurer

APPLY HERE (Applications close 11:59pm 5/10/23): https://forms.gle/i9k1UJtpUvBcXucJ9

“I really enjoyed being treasurer this year and being a part of the SWIM executive team. It was an incredible learning experience (about how difficult banks can truly be) and how scary it can be when you think you might make a loss. However, this year turned out really positively, with barely any COVID impact, even with reduced funding from MSB. Coming into SWIM with only my personal financing experience and economic subject experience, I have learned new skills and realised how much I like budgeting and treasury. I’ve also loved being part of such a supportive and lovely team.”

Position - Secretary
APPLY HERE (Applications close 11:59pm 5/10/23): https://forms.gle/i9k1UJtpUvBcXucJ9

"It’s been a delight to be a part of SWIM yet again, this year as its secretary. The best part about being the Secretary is that I got to be involved in the administrative work for all the events planned by SWIM. I have the privilege of working closely with each executive member to support the planning of their respective events- a great way to get to know the team! This fantastic role has grown me in my organisational and interpersonal skills, which has been so helpful for my journey in medicine. Being a part of this fantastic group that seeks to support women in medicine and meeting like minded people is definitely a breath of fresh air outside of clinical studies. Feel free to email or talk to me about this role- I am so excited to meet the new SWIM team for the new year!"

Position - President

APPLY HERE (Applications close 11:59pm 5/10/23): https://forms.gle/i9k1UJtpUvBcXucJ9

"Being a part of SWIM these past few years have been a very rewarding experience and has encouraged me to build my leadership, organisation and time management skills. This year we revitalised the fitness portfolio and strengthened our relationship with QMWS, through our PDW panel, and worked on tailoring our academic sessions to the new curriculum.. Working closely with the secretary and treasurer, the president works to ensure that all members of the team understand their role and supports them with any issues that may arise. The president also acts as SWIM’s main contact with UQMS, UQU and other societies. As we continue forward, there is great scope to expand the scope of SWIM’s reach and the president role is an excellent way to implement fresh new ideas that improve our members’ experiences."

The Ronald McDonald House provides a "home away from home" for seriously ill children and their families and one of the ways the community can provide their support is through the "Make a Meal" nights. Last semester, SWIM held a very successful MAM night at the Ronald McDonald Herston House, and we are hoping to help out this semester at their South Brisbane House!

We are planning to gather a group of 10-15 volunteers to travel to the South Brisbane House to cook and serve food for approximately 130-150 people.

Our next MAM night is on the 26th of September (Tuesday), and will require volunteers to be present from 2-6pm (the South Brisbane house is located at 283 Vulture St, South Brisbane QLD 4101).

Please fill out this form if you are interested in helping out 🙂
