On Friday, Farrer PS students and staff held a Reconciliation Assembly.

A key focus of Reconciliation Week 2024 was the Voices for Reconciliation: Louder than Ever event. This is the joining of voices from all around Australia to sing the Warumpi Band classic Blackfella/Whitefella. The song is a fabulous call to reconciliation with a catchy classic rock beat.

Farrer students learnt the song and performed it together. Students also designed hands, with symbols, messages and colours of reconciliation. These will be displayed in our school office.

Today FPS students participated in National Simultaneous Storytime.
This meant that at 12pm over two million children simultaneously read Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker.
Students also participated in activities relating to the book.

On Monday we had a special visitor to the Cameron corridor - a tawny frogmouth.

The tawny frogmouth is a species of frogmouth native to the Australian mainland. It is a big-headed, stocky bird often mistaken for an owl due to its nocturnal habits and similar colouring.

Thanks ACT Wildlife for coming to the rescue.

Farrer, are you ready for a Gardening Australia Watch Party?

On Friday, the ABC TV + iview gardening flagship will air a story featuring two of our schools, several of our students and much loved volunteer Carol Quashie-Williams, scientist in residence at both Farrer Primary School and Namadgi School.

As a CSIRO STEM Professional in Schools, Carol has enriched the lives of thousands of young people during two decades of volunteering, teaching life skills in gardening, nutrition, cooking and teamwork with lessons in biology, chemistry, earth and environmental science, physics, maths, literacy and art sprouting here and there.

An agricultural and environmental scientist and entomologist, Carol can spot a caterpillar at ten paces, even if it is hidden under the husk of a corn cob!

Namadgi School Principal Gareth Richards says Carol’s way of engaging the kids means her presence is felt whether she is on site or not.

“Even when she’s not at school, the kids are still carrying on with activities she’s taught them,” Gareth says. “We’ll see them walking around the garden with magnifying glasses in hand, inspecting bugs they find along the way. She has a lasting impact on our students’ lives.”

Another legacy of Carol’s involvement is professional growth and development.

“She builds the capacity of our staff. Working shoulder to shoulder with Carol they have picked up expertise they’ve been able to go on to share with our students.”

Named Volunteer of the Year at the 2019 ACT Public Education Awards, Carol started volunteering when her own children were at school and found it so rewarding she continued after they had left. With a day job in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, she says her involvement in the schools program enables her to maintain her pest surveillance and diagnostic and science communication skills.

“I enjoy inspiring the next generation of scientists and gardeners and love the enthusiasm of the students when working outside and in the environment centres,” she says.

‘My Garden Path – Carol STEM’ airs on Gardening Australia this Friday 17 May at 7:30pm (repeated Sunday 1:30pm, or catch up via iView or the Gardening Australia website).

Our year six students were delighted to receive their leadership uniform orders yesterday. The polos and hoodies look great!
Thank you to our P&C uniform committee for all their work in getting these organised.

A friendly reminder to all parents and carers that there are three remaining student-free days for ACT public schools in 2024. These are the first day of each school term:

Term 2 – Monday 29 April 2024
Term 3 – Monday 22 July 2024
Term 4 – Monday 14 October 2024

Student-free days are for staff development, enabling teachers and schools to plan in a student-free environment. The increase in student-free planning days from 2024 is part of our Teaching Staff Enterprise Agreement, which prioritises better teacher workloads for educational leadership, teaching and learning.
