TO INQUIRE CREATIVELY OR NOT?THAT IS THE QUESTION

WHAT IS CREATIVE INQUIRY?

We think of “inquiry” as asking questions. We ask questions because we are curious and adventurous, because we want to understand, know and see. Answers have value, of course, in large part because they lead to more questions. The problem with answers is they tend to close off inquiry.

Questions can be creative, or they can be asked in a creative way. We think of a creative question as one that is fired with imagination and dares to question taken-for-granted assumptions. We believe that we are all, to a greater or lesser degree, victims of our assumptions and beliefs—including this belief! We may think we are having original thoughts, but most of our thoughts are our society’s thoughts.
