The ‘crocodile’ position is repeated throughout GymbaROO sessions as it is a key exercise that aids in the integration of primitive reflexes, the building of body awareness and the stimulation of muscle tone, all of which play an important role in development and learning.

The ‘CROCODILE’ position and action is a repetition of the normal natural ‘stomach’ crawl of the infant, who has adequate ‘tummy time’ in their first few months.

By working through the process of planning motor activity, a child’s brain prepares itself for another cognitive leap: understanding the concept of future not what HAS happened or what IS happening, but what MIGHT happen. In other words, deliberate movement awakens the notion of deliberate intent which is the emergence of cause-effect. Once this occurs reasoning also emerges - a cognitive milestone to be noted.

We use motor planning for all physical activities! It is a skill that allows us to remember and perform steps to make a movement happen. A person must first come up with a thought of whatever they want to achieve (visualisation), plan out how they will accomplish it (motor planning), and then complete the action (ex*****on).

At GymbaROO our activities and equipment supports and enhances children’s ability to do this, having movement as a primary focus in our program.

Motor planning is the intersection of cognition, motor skills and sensory processing. In particular, tactile and proprioceptive processing are the foundation of body awareness or the understanding of where the body is in space. Spatial awareness influences - hand writing, critical problem solving and sport.

Motor skills include gross motor (large muscle) development and fine motor (small muscle eg hands/fingers etc). At GymbaROO our activities cover the full range of motor skill development that enhances learning and nurtures curiosity. Each lesson is specifically tailored to that age group, with activities which are age appropriate and that target specific developmental abilities and milestones.

Motor Planning is the ability to think and move. Body awareness and balance are important for motor planning.

Movement Matters!! Motor development is a crucial driving force for cognitive development (thinking skills). By moving, children are actively creating pathways in their brains which support muscle strength, coordination, memory and body awareness.

As a child gains experience and begins to recognise and remember more and more, his/her brain needs to develop strategies for managing new information. It starts by associating new information with what he/she already knows. Because the brain is so hungry for knowledge, it sends out as many sensory scouts as necessary to gather data and report back to the brain. To make sense of all this information, the brain must then learn to integrate it all - piece it all together.

Sensory integration, therefore, greatly affects not only perception but also comprehension and then response - ie learning style.

The world around your child is pouring in through their eyes and they remember (visualise) much of what they see. Experience is the basic core of visualisation. Providing them with a variety of experiences, situations and locations supports and reinforces memory. Seeing or doing real things impresses images on the brain more firmly so they can transfer this to their play and recall and mimic all these experiences.

Visualisation is the ability of the brain to remember a pattern of movement, a sequence of sounds or the look and feel of things.

At GymbaROO the Treasure Bag themes are the essential element in our program designed specifically for the development of visualisation skills. Linking the word and picture to your child’s own toy/book/picture/object is also important to memory and learning.

Action nursery rhymes, which use such words as up and down (Jack and Jill), round and round (the garden), or swing high, swing low on the swing are a fun way to develop an understanding of concept words. Hand rhymes such as open shut them, ball rolling games away from you or under your legs etc are not only a greatly enjoyed but worthwhile games to play because of the learning they include.

There is an important development in the thinking abilities of young children as they play with their toys - make a “high” tower (often counting to three - thus the counting concept is beginning), with their toys and blocks or with nesting toys, placing the small cups inside the bigger cups and so on …. same and different usually relate first to colours, shapes and sizes. The understanding of these words and concepts is greatly enhanced through physical activities.

At GymbaROO concept words are largely related to doing things with children given the opportunity to use their bodies eg “can you go up that ladder, crawl along the plank and down the slide”. Children need A LOT of movement to start to conceptualise time and space - understanding our world literally, relating it to themselves. Concrete learning is taking an abstract concept and creating an example based off real-life experiences to solidify the meaning of the concept.

Concept words are learned through experience and through hearing spoken language. Once toddlers have mastered using their bodies in an upright position, they begin to do activities with greater confidence and have a greater understanding of spoken instructions. With increased experiences and consequent knowledge, many ‘concept words’ have more meaning.

Words like ‘on’, ‘top’ and ‘in’ are directional concepts that require context to determine their immediate meaning, and context comes from experience. Similarly directionality acts as the brain’s tour guide to understanding our three-dimensional world. The development of directionality paves the way to the understanding and comprehension of symbolic language. Orientation and directional reasoning lay the foundations for symbolic language.

Level 1 & 2: bell
Level 3 - 8: spinning top and the colour blue

28/10/2023

In week 3 our puppets were fun to play with.

Our younger friends liked the puppets which they could more easily recognise like the elephants and giraffes while our 3 - 4yr old friends enjoyed playing with more dynamic puppets. The unicorns allowed the imaginary world to sprinkle its colourful fairy dust around the room while our dragons soared through the air of our Treasure Island Kingdom scattering all other puppets asunder.

In all cases Treasure Bag Time proved to be exciting and adventurous.

We also talked about the colour white which was our secondary theme. Some of us wore white, we had some white puppets & we found some white things (including balloons) down in the gym - so much fun!!

Coordination is defined as the ability to move different parts of the body independently or together. This fluency develops over many years through a kind of “bio-geometry” known as the midlines.

Midline development is a slow, natural process that unfolds from birth and as they develop they help children isolate individual body parts for independent movement, then work to coordinate movements involving multiple parts of the body.

Bilateral, homolateral and lateral movements all keep the arms and legs on the same side of the body. Cross-lateral movements use the arms or legs to cross over one or more of the midline.

Deliberate cross-laterality is the most complex of the midline movements, requiring a high degree of coordination. Crossing the midlines not only streamlines movement, it plays a crucial role in preparing young minds for formal learning.

Lateral movement is when one part of the body moves in the opposite manner to the other. Crawling is generally the first sign of laterality. Crawling engages all three midline’s simultaneously which supercharges the growth of the pathways spanning the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This independent movement requires something that hasn’t been all that necessary until now - planning! This is a major advancement for babies because it is a whole new way of moving and thinking. Deliberate movement awakens the notion of intent.

24/10/2023

In infancy the vast majority of deliberate movement is bilateral (or mirrored) movements - when one side of the body does what the other side does. Using both sides helps develop body control, muscle strength and coordination. Initially the body and brain will develop evenly on both the right and left sides. However until a child is able to alternate his/her arms and legs intentionally, crawling and walking aren’t possible. So around the time that a child starts to get up on all fours, nature is paving the way for the early stages of midline development.

In order for a child to develop more sophisticated thinking the two hemispheres of the brain must begin to cooperate more closely. This starts when independent movement beings, requiring vigorous and instantaneous left-right brain communication. This process will unfold through midline development and midline development is ESSENTIAL to optimising the “whole brain”.

Who knew funnels could be so much fun!!! Lots of smiles and concentration as we explore funnels. It’s been a popular item as we uncover the properties which include the rather exciting effects of pouring rice and lentils into our funnels and then watching it cascade out the bottom!

Are funnels a “toy” you ask? Well actually they can be used for cool learning experiments and better still, you don’t have to go further than your own kitchen to find one 😁

Climbing ladders will also improve hand strength, coordination, motor planning, concentration, vision and body rhythm. As children learn to grasp and release each rung and coordinate both arms and legs, they learn how to stay focused and on task, increasing confidence and independence.
