A Retrospect

1940’s

Woolwich Bible College was established in 1942 at a time of national emergency. With nine initial students, the College aimed at shoring up the supply of conservative and evangelical ministers to churches. Named Woolwich Bible College after its picturesque harbourside location, the College and its successors have amply filled that primary function. Alexander Main, the first Principal, inaugurated the College, and Harold Patterson brought stability and progress. Both were evangelistic in outlook, and the outstanding new initiative of the decade was the Woolwich Evangelistic Party under the guidance of Ernest Hinrichsen. This program of practical hands-on evangelism had a significant long-term effect on the College.

1950’s

The 1950s saw the beginning of the principalship of Arthur Stephenson. He painted on a broader canvas than his predecessors; he began to move the College into the mainstream of theological education, endeavouring to set theological work within both a fully ecumenical and fully academic context. A feature of this period was the number of tent missions conducted throughout Australia by the Woolwich Evangelistic Party. The decade also saw the death of Ernest Hinrichsen and the er****on of the Hinrichsen Memorial Chapel. Student numbers began to increase significantly in the 1950s.

1960’s

Besides a zeal for evangelism, Stephenson also had a thirst for innovation. He considered postgraduate studies to be important. He encouraged May Ashwood, a benefactor, to provide funds to meet the fees of graduates undertaking university study. This was succession planning. The establishment of QLD based Kenmore Christian College in 1964 was strongly supported, although it meant a reduction in student numbers. Pastoral studies attained a more significant place in the curriculum; the silver jubilee of the College was marked by the construction of a new library building, and the Missionary Certificate arrived to take its place alongside the Diploma.

1970’s

This decade encompassed two principalships. Allen Elliott’s lot fell on hard times; a national recession meant financial hardship. Also, the educational scene was changing, with tertiary education becoming free, and plans to make alterations to the properties to accommodate additional students, especially women, were thwarted by the local council. Rex Ellis succeeded Elliott and initiated much-needed change. The relocation of the College, Expository Pulpit, Theological Education by Extension and a Correspondence Course laid the foundation for further developments in the next decade. His premature death at the age of 45 cut short a promising academic career.

1980’s

This first decade of Keith Farmer’s principalship was a new era, with new personnel, new challenges and the opportunity to progress with confidence. This period marked a major shift in the College’s pedagogy. The 1980s saw the emergence of the Sydney College of Divinity, the development of a new model of education, the establishment of the Institute for Contemporary Church Leadership, the report of the Task Force on Theological Education appointed to investigate theological education in the Australian Churches of Christ, experimentation with an Integrated Training Model and the tragic death of a faculty member, Di Feeney.

1990’s

The early part of this decade saw the drawing of Kenmore and Carlingford into a much closer relationship, eventually resulting in a merger of the Colleges, named the Australian College of Ministries. In this period, the College became involved in distance education in a more deliberate fashion, with an expansion into other states. The period also saw the introduction of faculty exchanges, sabbaticals and visiting overseas lecturers. In general, there was a move towards a more vocational, more entrepreneurial and less institutional approach. It was a vibrant, innovative, flexible, national college.

2000’s

No longer a campus-based college, ACOM provided distance learning, with the slogan “Your Church is Your Campus”. A key distinction of distance learning was practical ministry assignments linked to each course of study, with a focus on personal formation of students, experienced through formation groups. Stephen Hinks was appointed as Principal, and enrolments increased as the move towards becoming a truly dual-sector provider began.

2010’s

Dr Stephen Smith was appointed as principal in 2012 and has led ACOM into a new era of blended learning. A research culture is being engendered, new awards have been approved and the Alliance College of Mission has been established. The College has returned to its original purpose and is now an agile and efficient distance provider, with the development of cohort learning centres providing face-to-face support for students. The establishment of a Graduate School is a major step towards a leadership specialisation while the Alliance Institute for Mission provides a centre of excellence in mission, with even more exciting developments yet to come.
