Women belong in every industry, including trades and tech! This we celebrate those forging new paths and proving that skills have no gender.
Seventeen years ago, Ana Maria Gamero left Peru in pursuit of a brighter future. She enrolled in a short welding course at Melbourne Polytechnic, then embarked on a welding apprenticeship in her late 30s to support her family. Despite facing industry biases and her own insecurities, Ana Maria remained dedicated to learning a trade.
Ana Maria is a passionate advocate for women of all ages who aspire to pursue their dreams. She encourages them to overcome their fears and keep pushing forward:
‘You’re never too late to study. You’re never too late to get an apprenticeship. You’re never too late to become something that will help you grow. Everyone faces challenges, and I understand that fear can be overwhelming. But if you face your fears and take the chance to move forward, I’m confident that you’ll succeed—just as many other women have.’
Women constitute only 15% of Australia’s construction and building workforce, with a mere 3% actively working on the tools* so there is much more to be done to progress equality in trades.
Women continue to challenge norms, redefine industries and inspire change. This let’s commit to a future where everyone has the chance to thrive!

Tomorrow, 8 March is ! 💜
This year, we March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls—because gender equality in trades matters.
Women make up 15% of Australia’s building & construction workforce, but only 3% are on the tools.* We need more women in trades!
By fostering inclusive workplaces and breaking down barriers, we create a stronger, more diverse industry for everyone.
We’ve come a long way, but there’s still more to do. Let’s keep marching forward—today and every day!
