What a week for CIDRN & Moondani Balluk!!
We spent three days exploring, expanding, and unlearning what research is and can be. We tossed around ideas and approaches to healing, critical perspectives, and creative methodologies. We learnt about the political, cultural and psychological importance of herstories and archives. We questioned our roles and positions and how we might work in solidarity. We questioned institutional ethics and wondered how a more relational, ethic of care can be embedded in research We witnessed painful and personal stories and laughed at the mistakes and missteps we’ve all taken in our work. Collectively, we imagined the possibilities for research that is underpinned by liberation, dignity and empowers communities' experience-near wisdom and ancestral knowledges.
We were incredibly fortunate to be supported and celebrated throughout the days by two amazing collaborators from City University of New York, Michelle Fine and Maria Elena Torre. They listened, questioned, pushed back, and generously shared their own stories and struggles. We are immensely grateful for their stewardship and friendship ❤️
Thanks to all the folks who attended and to everyone who made it happen. We are excited about the success of this "pilot" and are already imagining more in the future!

Join us tomorrow for the first in our seminar series for 2025! Dr Jo Doley will be presenting their work on some of the limitations of eating disorder and body image treatments with a particular focus on how these treatments may overlook marginalised groups (e.g.. LGBTQIA+ people, people who are differently racialized).

Fabulous way to start CIDRN 2025 with the launch of Dr Roshani Jayawardana's report, 'Brimbank Live' which outlines her research on the positive impacts of youth-led radio. For Brimbank Live, young people created pre-recorded and live radio content that aired on their radioshows based on their interests. Their shows covered topics such as sports, music, popculture, current affairs, gender diversity, politics and racism.
Food, local hip-hop and excellent panel discussion were enjoyed at Moondani Balluk for the launch. Full recoding of the panel discussion can be found here. https://www.communityidentity.com.au/portfolio/brimbank-live-youth-led-radio/
Congrats to Roshani and all the collaborators!

“We write together weaving our voices as we re-member our journey and our coming together fuelled by our shared desire, to tell our own stories on our terms; to contest virulent racisms and misrecognition of the African diaspora in media, academic, and political discourse; and to create spaces, settings, and narratives for identity, community and belonging.”
