The Hunchback of Notre Dame wrapped up over the weekend and we congratulate the team who brought this dramatic and redemptive story to life. Head of Production Dylan Licastro reflects on a ELTHAM College production that profoundly impressed our audiences.

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been available for licensing for nearly a decade. One of the primary reasons schools have hesitated to produce this incredible score is due to its complexity and epic size. I take immense pride in working at school that believed in the potential of this production and supported its ambitious undertaking.

"More importantly, I am proud of the students who trusted me, trusted the process and committed to telling this beautiful story. I never thought I would find myself in a position where I could direct this musical in a school environment, but this cohort of students are capable of achieving the extraordinary. In particular the Year 12 students who will be graduating soon, the world is in safe hands with you as emerging leaders."

With the excitement of a sold out run of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the College, we love this Throwback Thursday post about productions past!

Throwback Thursday!

Were you in the 1978 production of Trial by Jury? This was one of the earliest productions at ELTHAM College. Back in the day staff and students shared the roles – in Trial by Jury, the Principal Des Davey was the Judge! Our school productions were real community efforts, and continue to be made possible by our College families as well as staff and students.

Year 10 art students are getting their hands dirty in the best way possible, under the guidance of art teacher Phoebe Rose. Did you know ceramics isn't just about creating beautiful pieces, but it also works wonders for your wellbeing and brain health? The tactile nature of moulding clay reduces stress, boosts creativity, and even improves focus and concentration. Plus, the satisfaction of seeing your creation come to life is priceless.

We love these black and white images of the Hunchback of Notre Dame rehearsals. Quasimodo, the unlikely hero; Esmeralda, the heroine as kind-hearted as she is beautiful; Phoebus, the dashing young soldier; Frollo, the cunning villain - The Hunchback of Notre-Dame is not short of archetypical characters. But there is one central character which towers over the others - the Cathedral of Notre Dame itself.

With a musical output that includes Disney's The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast; and musical Little Shop of Horrors, you're sure to be familiar with the work of composer Alan Menken, even if you don't realise it.

He and Stephen Schwartz were working together for a year on Pocahontas before they began their creative journey with The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Described by Menken as, "dark for Disney, yet light for The Hunchback of Notre Dame," development into a stage musical evolved steadily over the coming years. The pair wanted to delve deeper into the story's emotional complexities Schwartz has since said he believes Hunchback to be, ''Alan's best score".

ELTHAM College encourages prospective student families, theatre aficionados and the wider community to join us for a memorable evening.
