THANK YOU ANDREW
At the School Board Meeting this week, Mr Andrew Hirst stood down as Chair after leading our Board for the past five years. Mr Hirst; a Yarra Old Grammarian was first appointed to the Board in 2012 and served our school with great distinction. He led the school through the uncertain years of the COVID lockdowns and his active participation at school events was a reassuring presence during this time. Mr Hirst distinguished himself as leader of our School Board, ensuring that positions taken and decisions made were the result of full director participation and clarity of thought. During his tenure, a number of significant building projects were completed, ensuring that our students and teachers have access to wonderful resources and facilities. The financial stewardship of the school was and remains in a very healthy state due to an ambitious but responsible approach to the physical improvement of the school. The School Board are the custodians of the mission of the school and as such have a critical role in the good governance of the school. The Board under Mr Hirst’s leadership has discharged this role very well. On behalf of all of us here at Yarra, we thank him for his leadership and service.

Peter spoke of his early school years and the important role played by his teachers in steering him towards a career in the media. He also spoke of the behind the scenes action during newscasts. Peter proved to be a very engaging and popular guest here at Yarra and he was very well received by our staff. VCE SUCCESS!
On behalf of all of us here at Yarra, I congratulate our Class of 2023 on their success in the VCE this year. I am delighted to announce that all students achieved their VCE and the results this year were among the strongest in the history of VCE at the School.

Some important statistics include:
• Percentage of study scores of 40 or more (22.4%)
• The Median study score was 35
• There were 4 perfect scores of 50
• Over 49% of all students in the year level received an ATAR over 90 (81 students). The state average is 9%
• The Median ATAR was 89.50 meaning that half the students in the cohort received an ATAR of 90+ they scored in the top 10% in the state and this is the highest in the school’s history

We are delighted with the academic efforts of the Class of 2023. These very strong academic results were achieved by students who participated fully in the co-curricular life of the School throughout their time with us. They also showed great modelling and leadership in their final year as seniors. The combination of supportive parents, effective schoolwide initiatives to improve teaching and learning, committed and skilful staff, a strong culture of excellence and aspirational and hardworking students has all contributed to these very pleasing results. Our students come to us with their own gifts, skills and abilities and we encourage all to attempt Year 12. The emphasis in the VCE at our School has always been on achieving personal best and we are delighted with our VCE results this year and we wish the Class of 2023 all the best with their future endeavours.
Dr Mark Merry
Principal
