Some light holiday reading: a student’s narrative on our education system | thinkEd Australia

A new post on thinkEd's blog.

thinked.com.au “Jake, you need to wake up,” I yell out to my 17 year old son – for the 7th time already this morning. Being a teenager, his brain is undergoing a lot of change, and this is affecting his sleep patterns, but this is unusual, even for him.

One of thinkEd's school programs has been featured in this month's INSPIRE magazine. A great story about a great project (although it's a pity the author can't spell Irish surnames!). See pages 28-30

It was almost 4th term, they were in Grade 6, and they had all but given up on learning – and were starting to disrupt other stude...

No wonder I need a nap . . .

“I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the
decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood
that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a
tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or
joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of
inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all
situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis
will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized
or de-humanized.”

Teaching is emotional labour

Emotional labour is quite different to physical
labour. Emotional labour is any kind of work in
which your feelings are part of the tools of your
trade. That is, your psychological and emotional
reactions get involved in some aspects of your
job. Being able to manage and control your
feelings is required to perform your job effectively.

Adapted from Hoschild (1983) & Albrecht (1990)

Teacher: "You have told me that one of your strengths is Kindness. Can you tell me an example of you being kind?"
Student: "Yeah, well, when someone asks me to bash someone up, I just say "No" '.
Priceless.

In response to parents' recent action against forced RE in schools, Access Ministries CEO Evonne Paddison said the VCAT hearing had been brought on by a ''small, secularist group, predominantly inner-urban, who want to impose their views on the rest of the community''.
Love the irony.

A class above

Whenever students ask me to teach them a new skill, I start with a simple edict: do you know anyone who is good at that skill? If they do, I advise them to study that person, and where appropriate, to copy them.
Should we not do this with our education system? Say there were a number of countries who were producing much better student outcomes that we are - would it not make sense to find out how, and then where appropriate, copy what they are doing?
