LEADERSHIP: Trinity College believes in providing real opportunities for growth and leadership for all students. These range from ‘traditional’ leadership roles in one of Trinity’s many clubs & societies, to more community-based experiences, such as Trinitarian Jerome Cubillo (TC 2009) hiking the Kokoda Trail with college mates – a formative experience.

It is our goal that these opportunities foster within our students the passion, commitment and empathy that are the cornerstones of any good leader. For Jerome, a proud Larrakia and Wadjigan man, his experiences at Trinity helped shape him as a leader, and set him on a path to pursue impactful, inspiring work for his community.

‘Seeing the work that the College does to ensure that they’re authentic in that engagement, to have the right impact for Indigenous students at the College..it sticks with you, it leaves its imprint...it’s just such a wonderful experience.’

We hope you can join us for our next exhibition, ‘Tais, Culture & Resilience: Woven stories of Timor-Leste’.

2024 marks significant commemorations for the people of Timor-Leste, including the 25th anniversary of their vote for independence and the start of the Australian-led INTERFET mission. It also celebrates 20 years of partnership between etwa - supporting women in Timor Leste and the LO'UD Cooperative in Timor-Leste.

The exhibition honours Timor-Leste’s journey to independence and tells a story of cultural knowledge, creativity, perseverance and strength, expressed through beautiful handwoven Tais and photographic work of Elaine Briere, Sally Gray, Jorge da Araujo, and Ross Bird, and audio-visual design by Marcus Salvagno.

Curated by ETWA in partnership with Trinity College, the exhibition illustrates how Tais are woven, used, and celebrated, and how these women and their Tais have endured extreme adversity to become symbols of Indigenous resilience and hope for the future.

Only a few tickets remain for the exhibition’s opening night on Thursday 19 September – you can find details via this link: https://tinyurl.com/mvt64ufw

Augmenting the exhibition will be a half-day symposium on Saturday 21 September at Trinity College, where a panel of scholars, activists, and experts will delve deeper into these themes, with discussions on Timor-Leste’s occupation, resistance, and traditional culture. Official INTERFET historian, Professor Craig Stockings, UNSW will be the keynote speaker. You can also find information for this event on our website: https://tinyurl.com/mvt64ufw

The exhibition itself will run Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10am-4pm, 24 September to 10 December 2024 in the Burke Gallery, which can be found on Level 1 of the Gateway Building at Trinity College, enter via Tin Alley.

Big congrats to Trinitarian Joe McGuire (TC 2019), on a very successful debut as punter for the Ohio State Buckeyes! His AFL heritage shined through over the weekend, making two massive punts down the field in his debut for Ohio State – which, for context, is one of the best college football teams in the United States.

COLLEGIATE. Every year, Trinity College attracts the best and brightest students, brimming with enthusiasm. It's truly a collegiate environment of curiosity, thought-leadership and friendship. These attributes were at the core of a student by the name of Ali Moore (TC 1983), who went on to become one of Australia's leading journalists. Ali found her place in Trinity, before finding her place in the world.
'A place like Trinity, I think is a really fantastic place to be in any time of your life, but especially when you're young.'

We won! Last night at the 2024 APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards, The Choir of Trinity College, University of Melbourne took out Performance of the Year – Notated Composition!

The performance featured the Choir of Trinity College, distinguished soprano and current chorister Mia Robinson and Trinity College Director of Music Chris Watson (chorus director) alongside the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and its conductor Benjamin Northey and Joseph Nolan on organ. The performance took place on Wednesday 27 September 2023 at St Patrick’s Cathedral.

‘It was such a privilege to be asked to collaborate again with the MSO, one of the finest orchestras in the world, and I am delighted that all the hard work of the players and singers, under the expert direction of Ben Northey, has been recognised by this award,’ says Trinity College Director of Music Chris Watson.

The annual Art Music Awards are presented by the Australasian Performing Right Association and Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (APRA AMCOS) in conjunction with the Australian Music Centre (AMC) to recognise achievement in the composition, performance, education, and presentation of Australian music.

DISCOVERY: Through our clubs and societies, sports and academic opportunities, we encourage our students at Trinity to get involved, and have a go. And sometimes, for students like Margot Foster AM (TC 1976), they discover a hidden talent. Encouraged by peers, Margot decided to join the Trinity rowing squad. She discovered she had a knack for rowing...which ultimately led to the life-altering moment of winning a bronze medal at the 1984 Olympics.

‘Trinity provided that sliding door moment. But for the fact that I took up rowing, I would have never had the opportunities I’ve had.’

POSSIBILITIES. Trinity is home to a diverse but likeminded group of young people who are uninhibited by the possibilities in front of them. From extracurricular activities, to sport, to establishing a network – the possibiities are numerous. For Olympic gold medallist and alum Tom King (TC 1992), it was an amazing experience that helped shaped him as a person.

‘Like most things at college, you get out of that experience what you put into it. You should grasp it with both hands and make the most of it.’

CONFIDENCE. One of the things that makes Trinity special is how it brings together students from a variety of backgrounds, with varied interests, passions and motivations. Classic 100 Concert 2024 05/07/2024

Last Thursday, Trinity chorister Mia Robinson (TC 2022) performed as a soloist in the Classic 100 Concert 2024 at Hamer Hall with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It was an imposing task: performing a technically very difficult piece in front of the MSO and crowds both in Hamer Hall and at home (as the concert was broadcast) – Mia's performance was nothing short of incredible.

If you missed the broadcast, it's available on ABC iView, at approx 38 minutes in:

We had the pleasure of hosting a farewell fundraising concert in the Trinity College chapel over the weekend, for one of our musically gifted alums, Phoebe Edwards (TC 2018).

Phoebe, a talented soprano, is heading off to London in August to undertake her Masters at the Royal Academy of Music. The concert was a celebration of her musical journey so far, and a fundraiser to help ease the cost of studying in London.

Trinity was a fitting venue for her farewell celebration concert, as she spent many hours rehearsing and performing with the Trinity College Choir. Good luck with your future studies, Phoebe!

VALUES. From their first day, we aim to instil in our students community-focussed values. It is our hope that students carry these values with them for the rest of their professional and personal lives. Dr Mimi Tang (TC 1982) is an embodiment of this hope. Nurtured in the Trinity environment of collaboration and helping others, Mimi has built an impressive career with these values at the core.
