Some of our music students took part in the “Battle of the School Bands” competition on 2 December at the Western Mandurah Foreshore. The event was organized by the Mandurah Music Club and featured strong competition from other schools, with a Year 12 band claiming the top prizes.

Our bands, “The Lilys” and “Semmini,” made their off-campus debut with fantastic performances. Despite not winning awards, both bands gained valuable experience. The event was an amazing opportunity for our musicians to showcase their talent and connect with a wider audience.

We caught up with our new Diplomats House Leader, Belinda Jenkinson!

CLC: How long have you been a teacher?
Belinda: I have been a teacher for 5 Years and have spent the last 2 years working in Student Services as a Year 11/12 coordinator.

CLC: What inspired you to join student services?
Belinda: What I have enjoyed most about teaching is building rapport with students and supporting their emotional and mental wellbeing. I was inspired to join student services because I felt like I could make a larger impact in this space.

CLC: Can you share a particularly rewarding or memorable experience in your teaching career?
Belinda: I find planning events for students the most rewarding experience. To see the event come together after weeks or months of planning and being part of memorable moments for the students. There is no better feeling than seeing students having the best time at an event you have helped bring to life. I have been very privileged to be involved in planning Science Fairs, Dinner Dances and the Year 12 Ball among others. My favourite event so far would have to be the Teachers Vs Year 12 water fight at Karratha.

CLC: How do you like to spend your spare time/what are some of your hobbies?
Belinda: In my spare time I like to be at the beach (especially Turquoise Bay), Jacob’s ladder, or in a Muay Thai class.

Year 11 General Woodwork students got hands-on with a resin incursion. Led by Haida and Jemma from Resin the Bar, the workshop gave students a chance to explore their artistic side.

The class gave students two options to create their cheese boards: using colourful pigments or dried flowers for their resin creations. Those going floral were required to plan their design, pouring resin halfway to let the flowers set. The next day, they filled the space to create a 3-dimensional design. Those using pigment were able to stir coloured powders and glitter through the liquid resin to create mesmerising patterns.

This term, select Year 9 students from Coastal Lakes College attended a Trade a Trade course specialising in Painting and Plumbing. The 3-day Try a Trade was delivered by MPA Skills in Jandakot and funded by CTF.

Our students absolutely loved the experience. They made the most of every opportunity and it was wonderful to see them so motivated. The first day they developed the skills required to be a painter. They cut stencils, mixed paint and painted walls. The next two days were all about plumbing. This required students to cut and glue pipes, dig trenches and lay pipes.

The group impressed the MPA Skills Trainers with their teamwork, positive behaviour and excellent work ethic. Seven students were awarded the Star Tradie of the Day Award! We definitely have some future successful tradies in the making!

Our Year 11 ATAR Engineering students spent the semester diving into mechatronics and mechanical engineering. They built remote control vehicles from scratch, carefully choosing electronic components, creating a unique steering system with 3D printed parts, and coding every aspect. The process included extensive CAD designing, covering everything from LED holders to an advanced Ackerman steering system. Some students, initially inspired by mining vehicles, switched to designing racing cars, demonstrating adaptability and creativity.

This project not only enhanced technical skills but also promoted teamwork and critical thinking. We applaud our Year 11 engineers for their dedication and innovation, eagerly anticipating the reveal of their creations.
