How To Cross Coastal Bars Safely

Video of our boss at work

How to cross a coastal bar safely in a speed boat. See all our skipper training videos at

Shallow inlet on the western side of Wilson Prom.

Have been asked by many to re-post this abalone diver bar crossing photo and explain.
Its the Shallow Inlet bar at Wilsons Promotory a few years back. I had already crossed in an extended 21 ft Devil Cat. Rob Alcock had crossed in his Old School Formula. John Purdy did same in his 23ft Shark Cat. Marcus Marriot plus Mick Wooly got through in their 21ft Cat and took this picture.
Pilot is Tas Martin, co pilot is Ray Henderson. Its a 233 Formula. These boys came down nicely and just kept going like nothing had happened. Tas and Ray were not new to this kind of action. Its not something you do by choice, but if your timing and luck is off on the day then you just have to make the best of a bad situation.
The trouble is you can't turn back. You are committed and have to punch through. You set the boat square on to the wave and have to give it the exact amount of throttle. To much and you get hurt on the wave impact, to little and you get pushed back and rolled.
You can get hurt twice. First if you smash yourself as you hit the wave and second when you land. You actually don`t know when you are going to land because of all the mist in the air. You just hang in the air waiting for the bang. Of coarse its not over then because there is always a second big wave and when you land you need to be straight and often the propellers just cavitate in the white water, so you can not get any speed up to push through again.
On this day Lou Benetti was in his 6m edencraft and was wacked by the very next set.

What out all you anglers

Commencing this Friday, Operation Venture will focus on enforcing snapper catch limits, checking fishing licences and educating anglers about fishing responsibly in Port Phillip and Western Port.
On-the-spot fines of $466 per offence can be issued to anyone exceeding catch limits.
Officers will patrol day and night, from the shore, aboard vessels and at boat launching ramps. They’ll be in uniform and plain clothes, undertaking inspections and surveillance from marked and unmarked vessels, including jet skis.
Anglers hiding illegal snapper catches aboard can expect to have their fish and boat seized, and for more serious offences the courts can prohibit fishing altogether for a year or more.
Fishing responsibly means:
- Abiding by the minimum size of 28cm and the bag limit of 10, of which only three snapper can equal or exceed 40cm;
- Releasing unwanted snapper quickly and in a manner that minimises injury;
- Snapper to be kept, must be landed whole so they can be measured by Officers;
- It is illegal to multi-trip, which is making several fishing trips in one day, retaining the bag limit each time;
- It is illegal to fin-clip snapper tails to shorten their length.
Officers will again be working with Maritime Safety Victoria, which is encouraging skippers to check safety gear before venturing out, stay tuned to weather forecasts, steer clear of ships while underway and avoid anchoring in channels.
Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing can ring 13FISH (133474). 23/10/2016
