This week HRSS is celebrating NAIDOC week together ahead of the National NAIDOC week. Our School focus for NAIDOC week is to continue to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into daily practice and curriculum activities. During the week we include special experiences that help us build knowledge, understanding, respect and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
This year’s theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Several of our Year 5 and 6 students attended UCSC for the Primary STEM Enrichment Program today. Students listened to guest speaker Lachlan Baxter from Substation33, a social enterprise initiative that aims to reduce the environmental impact of e-waste by recycling, repurposing, and reusing electronic equipment. Year 5 students then worked on creating a car out of repurposed materials, while Year 6 students experimented with coding for Micro:bits and Spike Prime robots, or had a go using 3D printing software. Students also got a taste of other secondary school subjects, with activities run by Arts and Sports specialists teachers and senior students. Thanks to all the staff and students from UCSC who were involved in running the day and providing this opportunity for our students.
