Noongar Seasons
April - May is the season Djeran - season of adulthood. Ant season and time to repair housing and shelter.
After reading about the lifestyle of the Noongar communities during Djeran we were able to participate in many rich and meaningful conversations surrounding the season and participate in experiences that were inspired by the changes that occur. This included learning about:
- the cooler nights
- the flying ants
- how the banksias begin to flower and are sources of nectar for many small mammals and birds
- diet changes during this season focusing around fresh water sources such as fresh water fish, frogs and turtles
- the repair and update of shelters to account for the coming rain
We’ve loved starting to learn about Makuru so far and displaying our learning on our brand new board! Stay tuned to see photos of the massive changes that have happened in our centre last weekend!

Have you seen our new Art Studio?
Over the last few months we’ve been able to work closely with the new owners to create an amazing art studio for our children to visit.
Why is art important?
Art opens the heart and mind to possibilities and fuels the imagination. Art is a process of learning to create ourselves and experience the world in new ways. Our art studio is a space where the children can create, explore and learn.

🪞 Who’s that in the mirror? 🪞
Mirror play helps us develop our visual senses, develop self-recognition, witness our emotions visually and foster language development.
Today in the Nursery room, we participated in a mirror painting experience. Using acrylic mirrors, we added them to our art easels and used them instead of paper for our paint. As we painted, the children were able to see their reflections in the mirror. Some of our favourite parts of this experience were:
🎨 Looking at ourselves, waving and/or saying “hi” to our reflection.
🎨 Manipulating the paintbrush to paint over what we could see in the mirror.
🎨 Watching what was going on around us through this mirror.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

At the going down of the sun and in the morning;
We will remember them."

🎨 Yoghurt Painting 🎨
Today in the Bilby’s room, we planned a sensory based art experience and did some yoghurt painting. Using our high chairs, we encouraged our babies to use their senses as they explored the paint in different ways. Also a bonus that it’s edible!
Recipe for at home:
🔸1/2 cup of yoghurt (we used coconut yoghurt for a dairy free option)
🔸 Small amount of food colouring

☁️ Cloud Dough ☁️
Lately the children in the Koalas Room have really been enjoying getting messy with sensory play!
This week as a class we decided to make cloud dough and it turned out really nice! We enjoyed manipulating it by squeezing it through our fingers, rolling it into balls and breaking it apart.
We’d love to hear if you have any ideas on what we should make next!

🌊 Noongar Seasons 🌊
Tomorrow we welcome Djeran - the season of adulthood! We’d love to share with some of the experiences we were able to participate in over Bunuru!
February - March is the season Bunuru (season of adolescence.) After reading about the lifestyle of the Noongar communities during Bunuru we were able to participate in many rich and meaningful conversations surrounding the season and participate in experiences that were inspired by the changes that occur. This included learning about a lot of marine life, including the coastal environment and the weather that comes with living there, emus, the white flowers of the ghost gums, jarrah, Marri and the red flowers of the Zamia.
~ We’d also like to say a huge thank you to Bundiyarra Irra Wangga Language Centre for our Wajarri Animals poster that we have used to help us learn the Wajarri names of the different kinds of animals this season!
