National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Across the centre this week we engaged in a wide range of experiences to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. These included:

🖤 Participating in the sea of fish challenge through Connecting the Dots through Culture
💛 Purchasing new T-Shirts from Yarn
❤️ Baking damper
🤍 Reading ‘Tjitji Lullaby by Michael Ross and Zaachariaha Fielding’ and creating art inspired by the night sky in the book
💙 Reading The ‘Rainbow Serpent By Dick Roughsey’ and painting our own rainbow serpent inspired by the story
💚 Reading ‘How the birds got their colours by Mary Albert’ and creating our own bird through a collage
🖤 Making playdough humpys using natural resources
💛 Listening to ‘Marringa (Bee Bye Lullaby)
Song by Emily Wurramara’

🤍 Practiced saying out Acknowledgment of Country during our morning mat sessions
💙 Reading ‘My Little Barlaagany (Sunshine) Book by Melissa Greenwood’ Miimiandjiinda
💚 Making playdough in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags
🖤 Dying rice in the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and creating gluing art with it
💛 Reading ‘Hello and Welcome by Gregg Dreise’
❤️ Painted seed pods

For our elders

This years theme for National NAIDOC Week is ‘For Our Elders’. Yarn collaborated with Indigenous Artists to create 7 beautiful pieces of art inspired by this theme. What a meaningful addition these have made to our uniforms.

“Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.”

Sea of fish 🐠

To embed Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our practice during National NAIDOC Week 2nd July - 9th July we took part in Connecting the Dots through Culture Sea of Fish challenge. As a centre we were able to create a beautiful sea of fish throughout our dining room.

Through this challenge we were able to participate in meaningful conversations surrounding the significance of fish to the lifestyles of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal communities. Through our learning about the Nyoongar season Djeran (April - May) the children in the Toddlers room have developed an interest in fish, frogs and turtles. This meant they were very enthusiastic about participating in this challenge choosing to contribute sea turtles to the sea of fish. Whereas the babies and kindy chose to paint a variety of native fish.

❤️Acknowledgement of Country ❤️

In the Kindy room we start each morning with an Acknowledgement of Country with our children.

An Acknowledgement of Country shows that we value belonging and the people, places, resources, traditions, stories and cultural obligations of the people who have connection to the places where we meet, learn, work and play.

“ Here is the land, here is the sky, here are my friends and here am I. We thank the Yamatji people for the land we learn and play. Hands up, hands down we are on Yamatji land”

Learning outcome 1.3 Acknowledge, share and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions, customs and celebrations.

Early Years Learning Framework: Principles - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

🐟🐳🪸🦀 World Ocean Day 🐟🐳🪸🦀

World Oceans Day is important because it raises awareness about the crucial role that oceans play in our lives and the need to protect them from pollution, overfishing, and other threats.

Today the across the centre our children participated in broadening their knowledge about the ocean through reading books, pretend ocean play and exploring ocean inspired sensory tubs! 🐟🐳🪸🦀

Djeran - Ant season (season of the adulthood) April - May

Across our centre a huge ongoing project of ours is learning about the Noongar seasons. During Djeran the Toddlers have been creating a lot of artwork inspired by the changes in the environment we’ve been able to see around us. This has lead to a lot of meaningful conversations about our environment with the children showing a particular interest in the abundance of fresh water animals and their habitat.

Through Bundiyarra Irra Wangga Language Centre we were able to learn how to say the names of some of these animals in Wajarri language. This was something the children loved as we listened to the pronunciation through the Wajarri Dictionary and practiced repeating it back.

In the video below Nyungar yorga Kerry-Ann Winmar, from Nyungar Tours, explains Djeran on the Noongar seasonal calendar across southern WA.

🌹 65 Roses Day 🌹

Today the Toddlers and Kindy children painted roses and made a banner with rose hand prints

65 Roses Day, supported by Wafex, is held on Friday 26 May 2023 and is our National Day of Awareness for cystic fibrosis ❤️

Next week we’d like to invite our families to wear yellow! Wear It Yellow is an annual campaign held by Children's Ground during National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June).

Why yellow? Yellow is the centre of the Aboriginal flag - the sun, the giver of energy. It is the colour of Children's Ground - energetic and hopeful. Yellow is the colour of ochre that is sacred in many First Nations commmunities, representing this ongoing connection to Country.

🥔 The Good Carb 🥔

Today the Kindy children spent the morning planting the seed potatoes we received from the good carb as apart of their seeds for schools initiative. This initiative aims to teach children where their food comes from.

Potatoes are high in essential vitamins and minerals, low in fat and a potent source of antioxidants. Potatoes bring far more to the table than just carbohydrates. Potatoes are known for being cost-effective, versatile, and nutritious. However, many people are not aware that potatoes are also friendly for the planet.

Thankyou WA Potatoes we can’t wait to watch our potatoes grow! 🫶

Dear Families,

As most of you are aware tomorrow the 20th April we will be experiencing a solar eclipse. The eclipse in Geraldton, Australia will be visible as partial eclipse with 81.9 percent of the Sun covered by the Moon. The eclipse begins at approx. 10am and ends at approx. 1pm. This eclipse reaches its maximum phase at 11:21am.

The Department of Health and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) do not recommend direct viewing of the eclipse. Viewing a full or partial solar eclipse directly, including with the use of visual protection, can cause eye damage or permanent loss of vision.

During the hours of 10am and 2pm we will be keeping the children indoors to ensure their safety.

If you have any further questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to ask.

🇮🇹 L’Italiano Toddlers Pizza Restaurant 🍕

Our interest in pizza began on the 9th February when we made our very own pizzas for lunch for World Pizza Day.

We decided to extend on this interest by creating a play pizza kitchen within our room. This area was Inspired by the local Italian restaurant L'italiano - Pizza Pasta & Gelato. By including these community connections we help to create a sense of belonging for children within their environment.

Today in the Kindy room we focused on developing our fine motor skills by reusing some leftover string to try a new style of painting!

Learning fine motor skills can help improve your dexterity and hand-eye coordination, which can be useful in a variety of activities such as playing musical instruments, cooking, and even typing on a keyboard. Additionally, fine motor skills are important for everyday tasks such as buttoning a shirt or tying shoelaces.

Did you know practicing fine motor skills can also help improve your memory and cognitive abilities 🌈
