👧 NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK IN CARNARVON 👦

Today I attended a NCPW Week morning tea in Carnarvon, on Yinggarda country, with CFSS WA LTD, Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne, Shire of Carnarvon, and many other stakeholders at the Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal Cultural and Heritage Centre.

As a former employee of Department of Communities in Child Protection, participating in National Child Protection Week activities are very important to me. We all have a role to play in keeping children and young people safe.

Thank you to Board Chair Dr Lex Fullarton and CFFS WA Ltd Managing Director Andrea Musulen for inviting me along, where Andrea launched a new Protective Behaviours Educational Tranining Sessions for Children and Families, with a workbook for children and an information booklet for parents and carers which I had the honor of sponsoring funds towards their printing.

The morning tea reflected this year's theme "shining a light on children growing up safe and supported, and as part of this morning's event CFFSS WA Ltd hosted a local art competition for children aged 4 to 17 year to outline how everyone has a role to play in the community to keep kids safe.

I had the opportunity to say a few words today, so I outlined the McGowan Government's record investment into early intervention to reduce the number of children in care, in particular the commitment of an additional $1.2m in funding to extend the Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making pilot in both Mirrabooka and the Mid-West Gascoyne to 30th June 2024, and the announcement by the Minister for Child Protection Simone McGurk MLA last week to deliver a new Intensive Family Support Team in Carnarvon to keep children safe at home, and a new Community Youth Officer role to support the delivery of Target 120 locally.

Congratulations to CFSS WA Ltd for all the efforts across the Carnarvon community, supporting both Department of Communities and WA Police, in their work to keep families safe and strong.
We will be celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day at RPS on Wednesday with activities in classrooms, a visit from Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne for our K - Year 2 classes.

Two of our MWPA team members graduated from Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne's 2021 Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program last month.

Throughout the 9-month program, these talented individuals spoke with many business leaders to learn about leadership roles in each monthly session and worked with other graduates to share their experiences, develop their leadership abilities and to graduate as leaders 🎓🎓

One of the MWPA team members who attended the sessions said it was a great opportunity to be selected and she learnt to enhance her leadership skills by getting a better understanding of the individuals in her team.

An outdoor graduation was held last month to celebrate their accomplishments throughout their journey, which included reflecting on sessions and their community projects over the course of the program.

We can’t wait to see what they’ll continue to contribute to our Port and community!

The Moon Festival or Trung Thu (in Vietnamese) was a great success. This year the festival was held on September 10th 2022, being the full moon of the eight lunar month. The Moon Festival originated in China and is celebrated in many Asian countries, the Vietnamese version has its own traditions and legends. In Vietnam the celebration of the harvest is a time to reconnect with family, especially children.

BILINGUAL Playtime in Carnarvon held the Moon Festival during term 3 in the afternoon on Friday 9th September. The parents and children made lanterns from recycle tin cans, decorated ornaments such as a giant stars and flowers. They also practiced traditional bamboo stick dancing. The afternoon was facilitated by Parenting Connection WA - Gascoyne. A community BBQ event was held on Saturday with more than 200 people attending. 🌝⭐️🏮💜
