๐Ÿ‘ง NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK IN CARNARVON ๐Ÿ‘ฆ

Today I attended a NCPW Week morning tea in Carnarvon, on Yinggarda country, with CFSS WA LTD, Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne, Shire of Carnarvon, and many other stakeholders at the Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal Cultural and Heritage Centre.

As a former employee of Department of Communities in Child Protection, participating in National Child Protection Week activities are very important to me. We all have a role to play in keeping children and young people safe.

Thank you to Board Chair Dr Lex Fullarton and CFFS WA Ltd Managing Director Andrea Musulen for inviting me along, where Andrea launched a new Protective Behaviours Educational Tranining Sessions for Children and Families, with a workbook for children and an information booklet for parents and carers which I had the honor of sponsoring funds towards their printing.

The morning tea reflected this year's theme "shining a light on children growing up safe and supported, and as part of this morning's event CFFSS WA Ltd hosted a local art competition for children aged 4 to 17 year to outline how everyone has a role to play in the community to keep kids safe.

I had the opportunity to say a few words today, so I outlined the McGowan Government's record investment into early intervention to reduce the number of children in care, in particular the commitment of an additional $1.2m in funding to extend the Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making pilot in both Mirrabooka and the Mid-West Gascoyne to 30th June 2024, and the announcement by the Minister for Child Protection Simone McGurk MLA last week to deliver a new Intensive Family Support Team in Carnarvon to keep children safe at home, and a new Community Youth Officer role to support the delivery of Target 120 locally.

Congratulations to CFSS WA Ltd for all the efforts across the Carnarvon community, supporting both Department of Communities and WA Police, in their work to keep families safe and strong.
We will be celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day at RPS on Wednesday with activities in classrooms, a visit from Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne for our K - Year 2 classes.

Two of our MWPA team members graduated from Ngala Midwest & Gascoyne's 2021 Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program last month.

Throughout the 9-month program, these talented individuals spoke with many business leaders to learn about leadership roles in each monthly session and worked with other graduates to share their experiences, develop their leadership abilities and to graduate as leaders ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŽ“

One of the MWPA team members who attended the sessions said it was a great opportunity to be selected and she learnt to enhance her leadership skills by getting a better understanding of the individuals in her team.

An outdoor graduation was held last month to celebrate their accomplishments throughout their journey, which included reflecting on sessions and their community projects over the course of the program.

We canโ€™t wait to see what theyโ€™ll continue to contribute to our Port and community!

We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be

This month at Ngala, we are acknowledging the strong women leaders in our lives, as part of the Community Respect & Equality initiative.

Strong Self Strong Spirit spoke to their participants about what the Community Respect & Equality is, what gender equality means to our them, we learnt that gender equality is when boys and girls enjoy the same rights, resources, opportunities, and protections.

We played a true or false game to test our understanding, with participants moving around the room if they thought the statement was true or false. Statements included: boys are stronger and faster than girls, only girls are kind, girls can cry, boys canโ€™t, boys and girls are brave, boys and girls deserve the same opportunities. We stopped and talked about our beliefs and why we felt a certain way with lots of stories and examples!

We then spoke about strong, independent women in our lives and in the media (especially The Matildas and The Diamonds recently), and wrote a thankyou note to a strong, independent woman or girl in our lives.
