Aboriginal Art Centre
Authentic Aboriginal Art We are a 100%, Aboriginal owned art centre servicing the Lower Murchison Region of the Mid West of Australia.

Based in Geraldton, a coastal regional city, we work with artists from or residing in Yamaji Country.

AS a contemporary, urban-based art centre we represent artists from more than five cultural groups. Our artwork is a celebration of this broad diversity, showcasing a range of styles.

Unearthing the state's storytellers - Seesawmag

On exhibit at John Curtain University until 30th July 2021 - "The Alternative Archives exhibition presents a contemporary visual archive of regional Western Australian arts practice, documenting a dynamic anthology of how regional artists relate to the people, homes, towns or regions that they know so well. It showcases work by 40 contemporary artists selected from a series of regionally-based exhibitions facilitated by local curators"

Featuring works my Yamaji Art Artist Charmaine Green and her son Mark Smith titled Unravelling Archives 1 & 2"

"Unravelling Archives 1 and Unravelling Archives 2 (2019) by Yamaji artist Charmaine Green and Yamaji/Maori artist Mark Smith, are encountered early in the exhibition and provide a taste of what’s to come. As detailed in the exhibition catalogue, their works reclaim iconography from the churches in the Mid-West region of WA through Yamaji symbols, creating a captivating collage of words, photographs and the aforementioned symbols in the style of stained glass windows".

Always looking for new and innovative ways to impart our cultural stories and provide an immersive visual arts experience, we are very happy to introduce to the art centre Virtual Reality goggles!

The goggles will allow audiences to view a short 3 minute film about the Emu in the Sky, "Star Dreaming" through the eyes of our artist Margaret Whitehurst. We wish to acknowledge our partners and sponsors who have worked with us to make this happen. Professor Steven Tingay at Curtain University, Staff and Management at Prospero Productions Fremantle, WA Day, Claire Brand from Project3 and the Staff at FrameLabs Perth.

We thank you for helping bring to reality what was initially just a dream!

Artist Sheryl Green co-facilitated a cultural weaving workshop with local partners Desert Blue Connect.

The workshops are a part of a 8 week Aboriginal Woman Resilience program helping woman overcome some of life’s challenges.

Our workshop is a skills and knowledge transference day where we help participants learn how to weave.

Weaving is a brilliant way to focus your thoughts and process them as you create something beautiful at the same time as connecting with your culture.

Weaving is a challenging skill to learn but we are very impressed how well the ladies have taken to it!

Thank you to Desert Blue Connect Aboriginal Liaison Officer Marika Yarran for asking us to come along to your first session.

Hello from Geraldton!

As many of you are aware, the Midwest was significantly impacted by a cyclone this week that has cut power to many of the towns in the region.

As a result we have sporadic and unreliable communications including phone and internet services

Please note that we are not connectable via email, social media or phones until further notice.

UPDATE: POWER AND WHAT'S OPEN IN THE MIDWEST ⚡⛽❄️

Western Power is hopeful that electricity will be restored to around 20,000 customers in Geraldton today, while the remaining communities without power may have to wait a few more days.

More than 28,000 buildings remain without power in the wake of Cyclone Seroja.

Overnight, power was restored to 1000 customers in Moora and Merredin.

Primary response and construction crews are expected to continue work to restore power in Kalbarri and Northampton today.

WHAT'S OPEN?? 🥪🍎⛽

Do you need food, fuel, ice or medicine?

Most shops, pharmacy's and fuel stations are now open in Geraldton and most have EFTPOS but if you can, take cash just in case.

Expect long lines at fuel stations and make sure you're nice to people.

The Ice works is working and bags of ice are available at the old fish market on Marine Terrace and at some bottle shops.

💸 HOW YOU CAN HELP 💸

It's been an extremely tough few days for many people and you may be wondering how you can help.

The best way to help is to donate money and you can donate now to the Lord Mayors Stress Relief Fund: https://appealswa.org.au/

Fire can’t stop Yamaji Art

Dear friends and supporters,

We are so very very pleased to announce that we will be moving back into our premises and be open to the public and Aboriginal arts community once again next week!

We are so thankful that we got the outcome we so very wanted.

We would like to take a moment to thank everyone that helped us through this particularly trying time.

First and fore most the Geraldton Fire department for assisting us in the day to make sure our art work was safe. (Can someone please tag a staff member?)

Angie and Alan from Pollinators - CityHive for working with us to use their offices and coordinating responses to our inquires about the building.

Leigh O’Brien and James Thompson and all the wonderful staff down at the Museum of Geraldton for providing us with a safe place to store our artworks and continue to create.

headspace Geraldton for allowing us to store our admin and arts supplies in your building and letting us come and go as we needed things.

The Geraldton Arts community as a whole who have offered words of support and were always on standby if we needed anything.

Last but definitely not least!...our amazing staff, board members and artist...especially our senior artist who continues to crank out artworks and also helped move all our things around the town during the first days of the incident. We love you very much and are so appreciative of all you have done to help us get the art centre back up and running!

I hope we haven’t forgot anyone as there was so much support shown...if we have missed you please know we appreciated everything you done.

We will be open to the public again Tuesday 6th April. Pop in and say hi because we’ve missed you all 🥰

Fire can’t stop Yamaji Art Yamaji Art’s management say they have maintained their usual business turnover despite temporarily closing the Marine Terrace art gallery after the February fire next door.
