Breastfeeding topics on your exam papersđź’Şđź’Ą

My daughter recently shared an exciting revelation—breastfeeding questions were featured on her recent science CXC exam paper! 👏 CXC, Caribbean Examinations Council, the external examination body in the Caribbean, for Secondary Education Certificates is doing an amazing job of promoting awareness about this critical practice. My daughter wasn’t fazed by the questions, (Yes! she is a breastfeed baby) but she did double-check with me afterward about the makeup of breastmilk as she reflected on her exam.

Including topics like breastfeeding in school curriculums and exams is a fantastic way to educate the next generation about its importance. and promote its practices. This proactive approach is helping to normalize and emphasize the significance of breastfeeding, setting the foundation for healthier societies.

Let’s continue to support education and healthier lifestyle choices

Dear Community,

As we celebrate the beautiful journey of motherhood, it's crucial to extend our support to breastfeeding moms. Breastfeeding isn't just about nutrition; it's a bond, a commitment, and sometimes, a challenging feat. Here are some ways we can offer our support to these incredible mothers:

Encouragement and Validation: Breastfeeding can be physically and emotionally taxing. Offering words of encouragement and validating their efforts can uplift their spirits during challenging times.
Educational Resources: Providing access to reliable information about breastfeeding techniques, lactation consultants, and support groups can empower moms to navigate their breastfeeding journey confidently.
Practical Assistance: Simple acts like helping with household chores, preparing meals, or taking care of older children can alleviate the burden on breastfeeding moms, allowing them to focus on bonding with their newborn.
Comfortable Environment: Creating a comfortable and supportive environment for breastfeeding, whether in public spaces, workplaces, or social gatherings, helps moms feel accepted and respected in their choice to breastfeed.
Flexibility: Understanding that breastfeeding schedules can be unpredictable and accommodating flexibility in plans or commitments demonstrates empathy towards breastfeeding moms' needs.
Access to Healthcare: Ensuring access to quality healthcare services, including lactation support, postpartum check-ups, and mental health resources, is essential for the well-being of both the mother and the baby.
Respect for Choices: Respecting a mother's choice to breastfeed or use alternative feeding methods without judgment fosters a supportive and inclusive environment for all mothers.
Emotional Support: Being a shoulder to lean on, offering a listening ear, and acknowledging the emotional highs and lows that come with breastfeeding can make a world of difference to a mother's mental well-being.
Advocacy: Advocating for policies that support breastfeeding mothers, such as paid maternity leave, lactation rooms in workplaces, and breastfeeding-friendly public spaces, contributes to creating a breastfeeding-friendly society.
Celebration and Appreciation: Celebrating breastfeeding milestones, however small they may seem, and expressing appreciation for the dedication and love that breastfeeding moms pour into nourishing their babies strengthens their resolve and motivation.
Let's come together as a community to provide the support and encouragement that breastfeeding moms deserve as they embark on this beautiful journey of motherhood

Is Baby Getting Enough Milk? (3:04s/English) 24/04/2024

"Hello new moms ❤️

We understand the concerns you may have about whether your baby is receiving enough breast milk. It's completely natural to have these thoughtsđź’Ż

Here are some helpful tips to reassure you that your "baby is getting enough breast milk:"

âś… Nursing: If your baby is nursing at least 8-12 times a day in the first few weeks, it's a good sign they're getting enough milk.

âś… Gain: Regular visits to the pediatrician for weight checks can confirm your baby is gaining weight steadily, which indicates they are getting enough milk.

âś… Diapers: Your baby should have at least 6-8 wet diapers a day after the first week, signaling they are adequately hydrated.

âś… Diapers: While the frequency can vary, your baby should have several dirty diapers a day, showing they're digesting milk and receiving nourishment.

âś… After Feeding: Your baby should appear content and satisfied after nursing sessions, often showing signs of relaxation or falling asleep.

âś… Swallowing: You should hear your baby swallowing milk during feeds, indicating they are actively nursing and receiving milk.

âś… Fullness: Noticeable breast fullness or changes in breast size after nursing sessions can indicate your baby is effectively emptying the breasts.

These tips can help ease your worries and reassure you that your baby is indeed getting enough breast milk.

If you are still in doubt consult your breastfeeding champion, lactation consultant, paediatrician or community nurse.

Breast milk matters most

Background

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life and that breastfeeding continues up to the age of 2 years in conjunction with appropriate nutritious foods. Some mothers find this recommendation difficult to achieve for many reasons including returning to paid employment and a perceived insufficiency of milk to satisfy baby’s nutritional requirements.

Mission

This support platform aims to help mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals, by providing critical supportive information.
